Chapter 4 - The Midnight ConfessionBack at Rhode Island General, the clock on the wall read 3:15 a.m. The ICU was dead silent. Most of the staff had retreated to the break room, leaving only the private security detail stationed outside the double doors.

Inside Room 402, Alice sat at the bedside, reviewing the latest round of blood gas analysis.

Suddenly, a weak, gravelly voice broke the quiet.

"You're... standing in my light."

Alice froze. She snapped her head up.

Stefano Marquetti’s eyes were open. They were a piercing, ice-cold blue, stripped of all fever and delirium. Though he looked pale and exhausted, the gaze of the syndicate boss possessed a razor-sharp lucidity that could cut through steel.

Alice didn't flinch. She simply set down her clipboard and leaned over the bed. "Welcome back, Mr. Marquetti. Try not to strain your abdominal wall. You've got about thirty stitches holding your liver together."

Stefano stared at her for several seconds, taking in her tired eyes, her blue scrubs, and the distinct lack of fear in her demeanor. "You're the one... from the mansion. The girl who handled Nero."

"And the one who stopped Dr. Voss from killing you with a lethal dose of beta-blockers in the back of an ambulance, and again from poisoning your IV with digitalis toxicity six hours ago," Alice added calmly, her voice entirely devoid of servility.

Stefano’s eyebrows arched slightly. A faint, grim ghost of a smile touched his lips. "Voss. Twenty years... and the bastard sold me out to Paulie Moretti for a piece of the Boston shipping lanes."

"You knew?"

"I suspected," Stefano murmured, his breathing shallow but controlled. "A king doesn't survive thirty years in this city without knowing who’s sharpening knives behind his throne. I just didn't expect him to make his move while I was bleeding out on my own living room rug." He paused, coughing softly before continuing. "Why did you stay, Alice Brennan? You could have walked away when the ambulance doors opened. You owe my family nothing."

Alice stood up, walking over to adjust the IV flow rate before looking back down at him with an expression that carried the weight of a buried past.

"I stayed because I know what it’s like to live in a world where men like you think women are nothing more than property to be discarded, locked away, or silenced," Alice said quietly, her voice dropping into a tone that sent an involuntary shiver down Stefano’s spine. "My mother spent her entire life running from a monster named Vincent Moretti. She taught me never to cower, never to beg, and never to let a man in a position of power dictate whether I live or die."

Stefano’s eyes widened slightly. The name hit him like a physical blow. "Vincent Moretti... you're Vincent’s blood?"

"I haven't spoken to him in twenty years, and I never plan to again," Alice said sharply, turning away from the bed. "So don't mistake my presence here for loyalty to your syndicate. I saved your life because it was my job as a nurse. But if you think I'm going to sit back and let Paulie Moretti or Leonard Voss finish what they started, you don't know anything about me."

Stefano stared at her back, a profound sense of awe washing over the aging boss. For the first time in his life, he wasn't looking at an underling, a debtor, or an enemy. He was looking at an equal.

Before he could speak, the heavy oak door of the room suddenly blasted inward with a deafening crash.
