Chapter 4 - The Shadow on the WallThe Colazo estate in Beacon Hill was an impenetrable sanctuary of centuries-old brick, iron gates, and modern tactical infrastructure. For two weeks following her discharge from St. Jude’s, Mave lived in the light-filled east wing of the estate while Finn recovered from his initial pre-surgery treatments under the watchful eyes of private nurses in the adjoining suite.

For the first time in her twenty-seven years, Mave woke up without the crushing panic of unpaid bills or the dull ache of physical exhaustion. Her shoulder was healing rapidly, supported by specialized therapy, but a new kind of restlessness was beginning to take root.
"You're frowning at the garden again," a rich voice spoke from the doorway.
Mave turned to see Rafe leaning against the heavy oak frame. He had discarded his formal suit jacket, wearing a charcoal dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, exposing the dark line of his family tattoos.
"I'm not used to soft chairs, Rafe," Mave admitted, offering a faint smile as she smoothed down her linen skirt. "I keep waiting for someone to hand me a tray or tell me my shift started ten minutes ago."
Rafe walked into the room, his stride silent and measured. He stood beside her by the grand bay window overlooking the cobblestone courtyard. "You don't owe anyone a shift, Mave. Not anymore."
"That's what frightens me," she whispered, looking up at his sharp jawline and winter-blue eyes. "I've spent my whole life surviving. Now that the survival part is handled... I don't know who I am without the struggle."
Rafe looked at her for a long, quiet moment. The intense coldness that usually defined his presence completely melted whenever he was near her. "You are the woman who protected my sister without asking for a single thing in return. You don't need to struggle to have value here."
Before Mave could process the warmth rising in her chest, the heavy double doors of the study opened. Marco stepped into the room, his expression rigid and dark.
"Boss," Marco said, his voice clipped. "We have a movement on the north docks. A shipment associated with the Moretti syndicate was intercepted, but Dominic Moretti just sent a message through our primary channel."
Rafe’s posture instantly shifted. The gentle, attentive man vanished, replaced by the unyielding head of the Colazo empire. "What did Dominic say?"
"He knows Mave and Finn are staying at the estate," Marco reported, dropping his voice. "He’s calling a sit-down at the neutral zone on 5th Street tonight. He says if you don't attend, he'll make the details of the girl's presence public to every cartel contact in the Northeast."
Mave felt her heart skip a beat. "Rafe... who is Dominic Moretti?"
Rafe turned back to her, his hand reaching out to touch her uninjured shoulder with absolute gentleness. "He is an old problem, Mave. One that I am going to solve permanently tonight."
"Is he dangerous?" she asked, her fingers instinctively reaching out to catch the cuff of his shirt. "Because of me? Did I drag you into a war?"
Rafe looked down at her small hand gripping his sleeve, his eyes burning with a dark, fierce pride. "You didn't drag me into anything. The Morettis mistook my restraint for weakness. Tonight, I am going to remind them why the Colazo family controls this city."
He raised his hand, cupping her face gently, his thumb tracing the soft curve of her cheekbone. "Stay inside the grounds tonight. Elena and Finn are in the lower lounge. I will be back before midnight."

"Promise me you'll come back," Mave choked out, surprised by the raw desperation in her own voice.
Rafe leaned down, pressing his lips softly against her forehead—a lingering, warm promise that set her blood on fire. "I always keep my promises, Mave."
