Chapter 5 - The Crucible on 5th StreetThe abandoned iron foundry on 5th Street was a monument to Boston's industrial past—cold, cavernous, and smelling of rust and damp cement. Rain hammered against the corrugated steel roof as three black SUVs pulled up to the perimeter.

Rafe stepped out of the center vehicle, flanked by Marco and six heavily armed security operatives. He wore a tailored black coat over his suit, his expression carved from stone.

Inside the foundry, Dominic Moretti sat in a high-backed leather chair beneath a single overhead floodlight, surrounded by a dozen armed enforcers. Dominic was a hawk-faced man in his late fifties, his eyes filled with the bitter ambition of a rival who had spent decades living in the shadow of the Colazo family.

"Rafe," Dominic sneered, resting his hands on the polished head of his cane. "You actually came alone... well, relatively alone."

"You asked for a meeting, Dominic," Rafe said, stopping ten paces away. His voice echoed through the empty steel hall like thunder. "State your business so I can go back home."

"Home?" Dominic chuckled darkly. "To your new little pet project? The waitress from The Salt Line? Word on the street is the cold, unshakeable Rafe Colazo has gone soft for a destitute girl with a sick brother."

The air in the room plummeted into lethal coldness. Marco’s hand drifted toward his sidearm, but Rafe raised a single finger, keeping his men still.

"You tried to kill my sister nineteen days ago," Rafe said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "You paid a disgraced server to put a steel baton through her spine."

"It was business!" Dominic barked, his smile fading. "Your family has choked our shipping routes for three years! You took the harbor, you took the rail yards, and you left us scraps! I wanted to show you what it felt like to lose something you loved!"

"And instead," Rafe said softly, taking a step forward, "you showed me who my enemies were."

Dominic scoffed, gesturing to his twelve armed men who immediately raised their weapons, red laser sights dotting Rafe's chest. "You think you walk out of here alive, Colazo? I have thirty more men outside this foundry. You give me the north docks tonight, or your little waitress and her brother won't survive the week."

Rafe didn't look at the laser dots on his chest. He didn't even blink.

"You always were terrible at checking the perimeter, Dominic," Rafe murmured.

Before Dominic could react, the heavy steel doors on both sides of the foundry were blown off their hinges in a blinding flash of flashbang grenades. Tactical teams in unmarked black gear poured into the building from the upper catwalks and side entrances, lasers instantly pinning every single one of Moretti’s men.

Dominic stood up in sheer terror, his cane clattering to the concrete floor. "What... what is this?!"

"This isn't a negotiation," Rafe said, stepping right up to Dominic until he towered over the older man. "This is a liquidation. Every warehouse, every shell company, and every asset registered to the Moretti family was seized by federal authorities twenty minutes ago, courtesy of the evidence my legal team delivered to the District Attorney."

Dominic went deathly pale. "You... you went to the feds?"

"I don't need to kill you to destroy you, Dominic," Rafe whispered, leaning down so his icy eyes were inches from Moretti’s face. "You threatened the woman I love. You threatened her child. You will spend the rest of your natural life in a federal supermax facility, broken, penniless, and forgotten."

Rafe turned his back on the cowering crime boss, waving his hand to the tactical team. "Take them all."

As the tactical team moved in, sweeping the room with professional efficiency, Rafe walked out into the pouring rain. He pulled his satellite phone from his pocket and pressed speed dial.

"Marco," Rafe commanded as he slid into the backseat of his SUV. "Tell the estate to turn on the courtyard lights. I'm coming home."
