Chapter 5 - The Unbreakable BondSix months later, the city was entirely quiet—or at least, as quiet as an empire could ever be under the rule of Gabriel Rocca.

The treasonous elements had been purged, the port routes were operating with unprecedented efficiency, and the name Rocca once again carried terrifying weight across the state. But inside the grand estate, the atmosphere had transformed completely.
The dark, suffocating drapes had been replaced with light, airy linen. The cold marble hallways were filled with warmth, music, and the constant movement of a home that was truly alive.
In the newly expanded conservatory physical therapy center, Gabriel was standing.
He wasn't walking unassisted—heavy carbon-fiber leg braces clamped around his calves and thighs, and his knuckles were white as he gripped the stainless-steel parallel bars—but he was upright. His six-foot-two frame towered in the room once more, his back straight, his chest broad.
June stood at the end of the bars, wearing a simple sundress, her hands hovering inches from his waist, her eyes glued to his feet.
"One more step," June coaxed softly, her voice filled with intense focus. "Shift the weight to the right hip, swing the left brace forward. Use your shoulders to push."
Gabriel grunted, a bead of sweat tracing down his temple. He gritted his teeth, focused every ounce of his willpower into his lower back, and forced his left leg to swing forward, locking the brace into place with a sharp metallic click.
He took the step.
"Yes!" June cried out, a brilliant smile lighting up her face as she stepped forward and wrapped her arms tightly around his waist, letting him lean his massive upper body weight against her for support.
Gabriel let go of the bars, his arms wrapping tightly around her, burying his face in the soft crook of her neck, breathing in the scent of jasmine and rain that was uniquely hers.
"That's six steps," Gabriel rasped, his voice thick with emotion. "Six steps on my own feet."
"Six steps today," June whispered, kissing his cheek gently, her hands resting against his pounding chest. "Ten steps next month. You're getting there, Gabriel. Inch by inch."
"I don't care about the steps anymore, June," Gabriel said softly, leaning back slightly so he could look down into her warm brown eyes. "I used to think my life was measured by how far I could walk, how many men I could beat, how much territory I owned."
"And now?" June asked, her heart racing as she looked up into the dark, fierce eyes of the man who had stolen her heart entirely.
"Now I measure my life by whether you're standing in it," Gabriel said gently.
He carefully reached into his pocket, pulling out a small velvet box. With incredible control and balance, leaning his back securely against the heavy parallel bar, he popped the box open with his thumb.
Inside rested a simple, stunning emerald ring, unadorned by blood money or arrogance—a ring bought with his own personal savings, chosen specifically for her.
June’s hand flew to her mouth, tears instantly shining in her eyes. "Gabriel..."
"I know I'm a complicated man, June," Gabriel said, his voice trembling with a rare, vulnerable sincerity. "I run a dangerous world, and I carry scars that will never fully heal. But I promise you, as long as I have breath in my lungs, I will honor you, protect you, and love you with everything I have left. Will you marry me?"
June didn't waste a second on words. She threw her arms around his neck, pulling his face down to hers, kissing him passionately as tears spilled over her cheeks.

"Yes," she sobbed softly against his lips. "Yes, of course, yes!"
Gabriel slipped the emerald ring onto her finger, fitting perfectly, a symbol of a new beginning built not on fear or convenience, but on an unyielding, unbreakable truth.
