Chapter 5 - The Reckoning at the Gates

The scene on the front steps of the Montgomery estate mirrored the tragedy of a Shakespearean collapse. Brianna was dragged out of the grand foyer by federal agents, her designer silver gown ruined by the dewy grass, her face contorted in a mask of hysterical rage as cameras flashed from the perimeter fence. She screamed Alexander’s name, pleading for him to intervene, but he stood on the portico, stone-faced and immobile, watching her true nature dissolve into handcuffs.
Barbara Collins, Brianna’s mother, tried to block my path as I walked down the steps toward the waiting black sedan driven by Colonel Hayes. "This is your fault!" she shrieked, pointing a manicured finger at my chest. "You destroyed her future! You ruined everything!"
I stopped, looking down at the woman who had spent a year sneering at my uniform. I didn't raise my voice; I didn't need to. "I didn't ruin your daughter's future, Mrs. Collins. I simply exposed the foundation of lies she built it on. Some people spend a lifetime pretending to be royalty, only to realize they were never qualified to survive the storm."

She stepped back, cowed by the cold authority in my tone, and looked away.
I slid into the back seat of the sedan, feeling the familiar, grounding hum of a high-performance engine beneath my feet. As the car rolled down the long gravel drive, leaving the grand iron gates of the Greenwich estate behind, I looked out the window at the receding horizon. The past was finally buried. The nightmare in Chicago was answered for. And for the first time in years, the road ahead was completely clear.
