Three months later, sitting in a quiet, sunlit office overlooking the harbor in Boston, I signed the final incorporation papers for my own private security and risk-assessment firm. The sign on the door read simply: Vance Tactical Consulting. No secret identities, no hidden pasts, and no apologies for who I was.
The media storm surrounding the Montgomery-Harrow corporate scandal had long since faded from the front pages, resulting in the conviction of Arthur Harrow and the total restructuring of his development empire. Alexander Montgomery had managed to salvage his company’s reputation, though he had stepped down as CEO to spend a year reflecting in quiet solitude, sending a single, handwritten letter of gratitude to my office that I had read once before filing away into a drawer.
Colonel Hayes walked into my office carrying two cups of black coffee, setting one down on my desk with a satisfied grin. "Clients are waiting in conference room B. A high-profile logistics firm out of Chicago needing a security audit."
