Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Coup

The executive boardroom on the fortieth floor of Callaway Meridian usually smelled of expensive cigar smoke and old leather. Today, it smelled like an execution ground.

Twenty members of the executive committee sat in dead silence around the massive mahogany table. At the center sat Andre, looking leaner, sharper, and colder than he had ever appeared in his life. But all eyes weren't on him. They were fixed on the empty leather chair at the head of the table—the seat traditionally reserved for the chairman, currently occupied by Camille.

She wore a charcoal-grey pantsuit that looked less like business attire and more like armor. Her hair was pulled back into a severe, elegant chignon, and a sleek tablet sat directly in front of her.

"Let’s dispense with the pleasantries," Camille said, her voice cutting cleanly through the nervous murmurs of the room. "As of 8:00 AM this morning, the federal indictment against Lorraine Callaway has been expanded to include racketeering and systemic fraud. The board has thirty minutes to vote on emergency restructuring, or Vanguard Capital will immediately call in every outstanding note on this corporation's balance sheet."

Arthur Pendelton, the senior-most vice president who had served under David Callaway Sr. for thirty years, slammed his hand onto the table.

"This is an outrage!" Pendelton shouted, his face reddening. "You can’t just walk in here with a hostile takeover disguised as a family dispute! We built this company brick by brick! Who the hell do you think you are?"

Camille didn't raise her voice. She didn't even blink. She simply tapped her tablet twice, and the massive projector screen behind her flickered to life.

"This," Camille said softly, "is a detailed audit of every slush fund, undeclared offshore account, and kickback scheme operated by this executive committee over the past decade. Arthur, that includes your nephew's fictitious logistics consulting firm in Savannah, which has been draining four hundred thousand dollars a year from our shipping subsidiary for services that were never rendered."

Pendelton’s face drained of color instantly. The bluster vanished from his eyes, replaced by a cold, primal terror. He slowly sank back into his leather chair, staring at the floor.

"Every person in this room knew what Lorraine was doing," Camille continued, her eyes sweeping slowly across the terrified faces of the men and women who had spent years looking down on her. "You stayed silent because you were benefiting from the runoff. You thought Andre was a figurehead you could control, and you thought I was a harmless ornament you could ignore."

She leaned forward, resting her palms on the mahogany surface.

"The era of the Callaway family cartel is officially over. From this moment forward, Callaway Meridian operates under the governance of Vanguard Holdings. Those who wish to stay will submit to independent third-party audits and sign strict non-corruption pacts. Those who prefer to resign can pack their belongings before lunch."

Silence settled over the room like lead. Nobody moved. Nobody objected.

Andre watched his wife from his seat to her right. A strange mixture of awe and deep, consuming respect warred within his chest. He had spent his entire life trapped in the shadow of his mother's iron fist, believing that power meant intimidation and control. Camille had just dismantled a multi-million-dollar corrupt syndicate with quiet facts, absolute calm, and unshakeable grace.

He reached across the table, his hand finding hers. Camille glanced down, her expression softening just a fraction before she turned back to the room.

"Meeting adjourned," she said.
