Chapter 4 - Shadows and Echoes

The visiting room at the Davidson County Detention Center was stark, smelling faintly of industrial disinfectant and stale coffee. Fluorescent lights hummed overhead, casting a harsh glare over the scratched stainless-steel table bolted to the floor.

Lorraine Callaway sat on the other side of the partition, wearing an orange jumpsuit that clashed violently with her dyed blonde hair and manicured nails. Her wrists were bare of bracelets, her fingers bare of diamonds. When the heavy metal door clicked open and Camille walked in alone, Lorraine’s eyes flashed with a venomous, unquenchable hatred.

"You think you’ve won," Lorraine spat, leaning forward until her face pressed close to the reinforced glass. "You think because you bought some debt and flashed a few papers that you actually belong here? You’re nothing. A nobody from nowhere. My son will divorce you the second he realizes what kind of manipulative snake he married."

Camille pulled out the metal chair, sat down with deliberate slowness, and folded her hands on the table. She looked at her mother-in-law not with anger or triumph, but with a profound, almost detached pity.

"Andre didn't divorce me, Lorraine," Camille said softly. "In fact, he spent the entire morning signing over his personal voting shares in the foundation to me."

Lorraine’s breath hitched. "You... you manipulated him. You brainwashed him!"

"I didn't have to brainwash him," Camille replied evenly. "I just showed him the truth. Something you spent thirty years making sure he was too terrified to see. You didn't raise a son, Lorraine. You raised an insurance policy. And when you realized he loved someone who couldn't be controlled by your fear tactics, you tried to break me with a riding crop in front of two hundred people."

Lorraine’s face twitched. "I should have hit harder."

"Perhaps," Camille said, her voice dropping an octave, carrying an edge so sharp it made Lorraine flinch. "But the crop was made of leather, Lorraine. Empires are made of steel. And you forgot who owned the foundry."

"What do you want?" Lorraine hissed, her voice finally cracking under the weight of her reality. "You’ve destroyed my company. You’ve ruined my reputation. What more could you possibly want from me?"

May you like

"Nothing," Camille said, standing up and smoothing down the lapels of her jacket. "I didn't come here to negotiate, Lorraine. I came to show you what failure looks like when it finally catches up with arrogance."

She turned toward the door, leaving Lorraine slamming her fists against the glass, screaming obscenities into the sterile, echoing room.
