Chapter 4 - The Housekeeper's CourageDown in the dark, cavernous wine cellar, the air was cool and smelled of aged oak and damp stone. Carla Bennett clutched Nina tightly against her chest, her body trembling with absolute terror.

They had barricaded themselves inside a small storage pantry behind the wine racks after hearing the gunshots echo from the upper floors. Nina buried her face in her mother’s shoulder, whimpering softly.

“Mommy, what’s that loud noise?” Nina whispered, tears welling in her large dark eyes.

“It’s okay, angel. Mommy’s right here. Just close your eyes and don't make a sound,” Carla whispered back, tears streaming down her face as she prayed silently for a miracle.

Heavy boots crunched on the gravel outside the wooden cellar door.

Creak.

The cellar door swung open. A flashlight beam cut through the darkness, sweeping across the rows of vintage wine bottles.

“Check the back! Dean wants everyone eliminated—especially the staff who saw too much!” a harsh voice echoed through the stone chamber.

Carla held her breath, pressing herself deeper into the shadows behind a stack of wooden crates. Her heart pounded so loudly she was certain the men could hear it.

Footsteps drew closer. The beam of the flashlight swept across the floor just inches from where Carla was hiding.

Suddenly, a sharp metallic clink echoed from the opposite side of the cellar—a distraction deliberately triggered by an automated security relay Massimo had activated from the console.

“Hey! What was that?” one enforcer shouted.

“Check over there!”

As the two armed men rushed toward the noise, a dark figure rolled silently out from the shadows near the cellar stairs.

It was Massimo.

He had abandoned his wheelchair, dragging himself across the stone floor with lethal efficiency, his muscular arms propelling him forward with terrifying speed. Before the enforcers could turn around, two suppressed shots split the air.

Pfft! Pfft!

Both men dropped instantly, neutralizing the threat before they even knew what hit them.

Massimo dragged himself across the floor toward the storage pantry, breathing heavily, his dark hair slicked with sweat. He pushed the door open with the barrel of his weapon.

Carla gasped, raising her hands defensively before she recognized the cold gray eyes looking at her.

“Mr. Rinaldi...” she breathed in disbelief.

“Get behind me,” Massimo ordered tersely, his voice brooking no argument. He reached out and gently patted Nina’s curly hair. “You’re safe now, little doctor.”

Nina managed a brave little smile through her tears. “I knew you’d walk, Uncle Massimo. Even if your legs are still sleeping.”

A strange, foreign warmth pierced through the armor around Massimo’s heart. He looked at Carla, whose eyes were filled with profound gratitude and unwavering loyalty.

“We aren't out of this yet,” Massimo said, his expression hardening. “Dean is still upstairs, holding the master communications relay. And Camille is up there with him.”

Carla swallowed hard, stepping forward with unexpected courage. “Mr. Rinaldi… there’s a service elevator shaft behind the wine racks. It leads directly up to the master study behind the library. Dean won't expect anyone to come from behind.”

Massimo looked at the housekeeper, seeing a fierce, protective mother who was willing to risk everything to survive.

“Lead the way, Carla,” Massimo said.
