Chapter 5 - The Final ConfrontationThe upper-level master study was bathed in the harsh red glow of the estate’s emergency lighting system.

Dean Foster paced back and forth across the Persian rug, clutching a satellite phone to his ear while trying to coordinate an escape chopper from the roof. Beside him stood Camille Ashwood, shaking uncontrollably, her designer dress stained with dust from the shattered chandelier in the hall below.

“What do you mean the airspace is locked down?!” Dean roared into the phone. “Override it! I have the Rinaldi accounts transferred! Just get that chopper on the roof!”

He slammed the phone down onto the mahogany desk.

Camille turned to him, her eyes wide with panic. “Dean… you said this would be clean! You said Massimo would just fade away quietly! Now the entire estate is locked down, and your men are dead!”

“Shut up, Camille!” Dean snapped, grabbing her by the arm. “Once I clear out the remaining loyalists and eliminate the housekeeper, I control everything. The empire is mine.”

“Is it?”

The calm, chilling voice cut through the room like a razor blade.

Dean and Camille spun around.

Standing in the doorway, framed by the red emergency lights, was Massimo Rinaldi. He had hoisted himself into a high-backed leather executive chair that had been fitted with heavy-duty caster wheels, holding his submachine gun across his lap with absolute, unwavering precision.

Behind him stood Carla and Nina, safely sheltered in the inner corridor.

Dean’s face twisted into an ugly sneer. He drew his pistol, leveling it straight at Massimo’s head. “Well, well. Look who decided to crawl out of the basement. You should have stayed down there, boss. I gave you six months of life. I should have finished the job on Brooklyn Avenue.”

“You were like a brother to me, Dean,” Massimo said softly, his voice dangerously devoid of emotion. “I trusted you with my life, my money, and my home. And you traded all of that for greed.”

“Trust is for fools, Massimo!” Dean laughed bitterly, his finger tightening on the trigger. “You got soft! You started believing you were invincible! And now, you’re going to die in this room while I burn your empire to the ground.”

Dean fired.

At the exact microsecond the hammer fell, Massimo didn't flinch. With lightning-fast reflexes, he threw his weight to the side, tipping the heavy caster chair over.

Bang!

The bullet shattered the glass window behind him.

Before Dean could adjust his aim for a second shot, Massimo raised his weapon from the floor and squeezed the trigger in a sustained, controlled burst.

Rat-tat-tat-tat!

Impacts tore through Dean’s shoulder and chest, spinning him around and sending his weapon clattering across the marble floor. Dean staggered backward, coughing up blood before collapsing hard against the mahogany desk, sliding down into a motionless heap.

Camille screamed, dropping to her knees in absolute terror, covering her face with her hands.

Massimo righted his chair with a powerful heave of his arms, rolling forward until he stopped directly in front of the cowering woman. He looked down at her with cold, unyielding indifference.

“You knew about the ambush, Camille,” Massimo stated flatly.

“I… I was forced! Dean threatened me!” she sobbed hysterically.

“Pack your bags, Camille,” Massimo said quietly. “You’re leaving the Rinaldi estate tonight. And if you ever show your face in New York again, you won't live to see the sunrise.”

She scrambled frantically toward the door, fleeing the room in blind terror.

Silence descended upon the study, broken only by the hum of the emergency generators and the soft patter of rain beginning to fall outside against the reinforced glass.
