Chapter 2 - The Shadow in the HallwayThe warmth of the afternoon light felt mocking against the raw, frozen terror gripping the hallway. Jonathan knelt on the polished marble, supporting the weight of the traumatized woman as her body wracked with violent, silent aftershocks. Every breath she took sounded like glass grinding in her throat.

"It's okay. You're safe now. I've got you," Jonathan murmured, his voice a low, steady rumble meant to anchor her back to reality. He stroked her tangled hair gently, his own heart hammering against his ribs like a sledgehammer.

Chloe stood a few feet away, her small fingers laced together tightly in front of her dress. Her wide, innocent eyes watched every micro-movement, absorbing the heavy, suffocating weight of the adults' fear. She didn't cry; she was frozen in a state of hyper-awareness that children often adopt when they realize the world isn't as safe as they were promised.

As Jonathan shifted his weight to help the woman stand, a soft footstep echoed from the arched entryway down the hall.

Jonathan’s head snapped up. His eyes locked onto the figure stepping out of the shadows.

It was Victor Vance, the estate's primary legal advisor and financial executor—a man whose polished silver hair, immaculate bespoke suits, and permanent, shark-like smile had always commanded an uneasy authority in the house. Victor stopped dead in his tracks. The easy, confident stride he usually wore vanished in a single frame of time.

The transition on Jonathan’s face was instantaneous. The confusion and pity melted away, replaced by a dark, sudden wave of suspicion. The color rushed back to Jonathan's face, turning into a hot, dangerous flush.

"Victor," Jonathan said, his voice dropping an octave, losing all its previous warmth.

Victor forced a tight, artificial smile to his lips, though his eyes darted nervously toward the open floor hatch and the bruised, shivering woman clinging to Jonathan's arm. "Jonathan. What on earth is going on here? There was a commotion... I heard screaming..."

"Did you?" Jonathan interrupted, his tone razor-sharp. He slowly helped the woman to her feet, keeping his body positioned squarely between her and Victor. "Funny. The house has been dead silent all afternoon. Except for what was coming from underneath it."

Victor took a half-step forward, his hands sliding smoothly into his trouser pockets. A classic tell of a man trying to project casual control while his internal machinery panicked. "It's some kind of mistake. A squatter, perhaps? Or a deranged trespasser who found a way into the old foundation tunnels. You should call the authorities immediately and let security handle her."

"Handle her?" Jonathan’s voice rose, tight with suppressed fury. He looked down at the woman beside him.

At the sound of Victor's voice, a violent shudder ripped through the woman's body. She slowly turned her head away from Jonathan’s shoulder. Her eyes, glazed with terror, fixed directly on Victor Vance.

The air in the hallway seemed to drop twenty degrees.

The woman’s breath caught. Her lower lip trembled violently. With agonizing slowness, she raised her right hand—bruised, scraped, and caked in dry dirt—and pointed a shaking, accusing finger directly at Victor.

Victor flinched. For a fraction of a second, his carefully constructed facade cracked wide open, revealing a flash of pure, unadulterated panic. He took a sharp step back, his hands clenching into fists inside his pockets.

"You..." the woman whispered, her voice a raw, broken rasp that cut through the silence like a knife. "You put me there... You monster..."

Jonathan stared at Victor, the final pieces of an impossible puzzle snapping violently into place. The missing financial records, the sudden, unexplained disappearance of the estate's previous co-owner months ago, Victor's endless excuses about why certain rooms were permanently locked—it all converged into a single, terrifying reality.

"Is that true, Victor?" Jonathan whispered, standing up to his full height, his eyes burning with a cold, lethal fury. "Is that why she was locked in the dark?"
