Chapter 5 - Shadows LiftingThe golden hues of autumn had begun to paint the sprawling gardens of the Moretti estate. A week had passed since the harrowing discovery beneath the floorboards, and though the mansion was still quiet, the heavy, oppressive atmosphere that used to haunt its halls was entirely gone. The air felt lighter, cleaner, and full of honest breath.

In the sunlit parlor, Clara sat by the window wrapped in a soft cashmere shawl. Her color had returned to her cheeks, and though her eyes still carried the faint, distant shadow of what she had endured, a gentle, genuine smile graced her lips as she watched the sunlight stream across the polished floor.
A soft knock sounded at the open door. Jonathan walked in, carrying a small silver tray with a cup of herbal tea and a plate of fresh pastries.
"How are you feeling today, Clara?" Jonathan asked warmly, setting the tray down on the low table beside her chair.
Clara looked up, her expression softening with profound gratitude. "Better every day, Jonathan. Every time I wake up and see the open sky instead of damp stone, I have to remind myself that I'm actually free. I can't thank you... and little Chloe... enough."
"Don't thank me," Jonathan said, pulling up a chair and sitting down opposite her. "Thank Chloe's sharp ears. If she hadn't stopped to listen when everyone else was walking past, none of this would have come to light."
"Where is Chloe?" Clara asked, her eyes glancing toward the garden outside.
"Out in the courtyard with her mother, picking out white roses for the garden restoration," Jonathan chuckled softly. "She's decided she wants to plant a whole new bed right above where that dreadful hatch used to be. We had contractors seal up the sub-floor permanently yesterday. Poured solid concrete down there. No more secrets. No more dark spaces."
Clara closed her eyes for a moment, letting out a long, peaceful breath. "Good. Let the past stay buried where it belongs. What's happening with Victor and his associates?"
"Their trial is moving forward at lightning speed," Jonathan replied, his voice firm and resolute. "With the digital evidence and financial records we recovered, their defense attorneys have already advised them to plead guilty in exchange for avoiding maximum security. Victor will spend the rest of his life behind bars, reflecting on how his greed destroyed everything he tried to steal."
Clara nodded slowly, a sense of absolute closure settling over her soul. She reached across the small table and placed her hand over Jonathan’s. Her skin was warm, steady, and alive.

"The house feels different now," Clara whispered. "It finally feels like a home instead of a cage."
"And that's the way it's going to stay," Jonathan promised, squeezing her hand gently. "From here on out, everything in this house is built on truth."
