Chapter 4 - The Price of ProtectionTwo weeks passed.

The storm that had battered New York was replaced by the crisp, golden air of early autumn. The Moretti estate had returned to its immaculate, disciplined routine, but beneath the surface, everything had changed.

Elena was no longer living in the basement staff quarters. By Dante’s direct order, she had been moved permanently to a private apartment in the east wing—a beautiful, sunlit set of rooms featuring a private balcony overlooking the rose gardens. She was no longer assigned to heavy cleaning duty; instead, Dante had appointed her as his personal house manager, giving her oversight over the estate’s daily operations, guest logistics, and internal staffing.

It was a position of immense trust, one that raised plenty of hushed whispers among the veteran staff. But no one dared question the boss's decision. Especially not after Marco, the head of security, was quietly reassigned to head the estate's outer perimeter guard, while Leo took over all internal security protocols.

Elena sat at a polished oak desk in her new office on the second floor, reviewing the catering schedules for the upcoming autumn gala—the Moretti family’s largest annual charity event, hosted at the estate to showcase Dante's legitimate business empire to New York’s high society, politicians, and district attorneys.

A knock sounded at her door.

"Come in," Elena called out, adjusting her navy-blue tailored skirt suit—a far cry from the drab maid uniform she used to wear.

The door opened, and Dante walked in. He wore a crisp white shirt with the top button undone, his sleeves rolled up, looking effortlessly powerful. Over the past fortnight, the professional barrier between them had begun to blur. They spent hours together every evening in his private study, going over estate accounts, discussing security measures, and talking about things that had nothing to do with business—art, literature, and the quiet dreams Elena had buried long ago.

"You're working late," Dante said, setting a porcelain cup of dark espresso on her desk.

"The gala is in three days," Elena replied, offering him a warm, genuine smile that brought a rare softness to his dark eyes. "The floral arrangements need final approval, and the senator's security detail is being difficult about the valet entry."

"Let Leo handle the senator," Dante said, leaning against the edge of her desk, looking down at her with an intensity that still made her heart skip a beat. "How is your cheek?"

Elena touched her left cheekbone instinctively. The bruise had completely faded, leaving behind smooth, unblemished skin. "It doesn't hurt anymore. Thanks to your medical kit."

"Good," Dante murmured. He reached out, his thumb gently tracing her jawline. The gesture was slow, intimate, sending a pleasant warmth rushing through her veins. "Because I need you looking your best on Friday night."

Elena blinked, surprised. "On Friday? Dante, I'm managing the staff for the gala. I'll be in the kitchens and monitoring the service corridors."

"No," Dante said firmly, his eyes locking onto hers. "You won't be in the kitchens. You will be attending the gala as my guest."

Elena’s breath caught in her throat. "Your guest? Dante, I can't do that. The society papers, the other crime families, the DA... they all know I was a maid here two weeks ago. If I walk down that staircase on your arm, it will cause a scandal."

"Let them gossip," Dante said coldly, though his thumb continued to gently stroke her jaw. "I don't care about society papers, and I certainly don't care about the opinions of corrupt politicians. On Friday night, I want the entire city to see who stands beside me."

"Dante..." Elena whispered, her chest rising and falling rapidly. "Why are you doing this? Why are you lifting me up like this?"

Dante leaned down, closing the space between them until his face was inches from hers. She could feel the steady warmth of his breath, smell the intoxicating scent of cedar and rain that belonged entirely to him.

"Because from the moment I locked that kitchen door and saw you standing in the dark, I knew I was never going to let you go," Dante confessed, his deep voice thick with an emotion he rarely allowed himself to show. "You showed more courage in that kitchen than half the men in my syndicate, Elena. You belong at my side. Not beneath me, not behind me. Besideme."

Elena’s heart hammered furiously against her ribs. For weeks, she had fought the overwhelming pull she felt toward this dangerous, complex man. He was a ruthless crime boss to the world, but to her, he was the man who had protected her when she was broken, who had given her a life, a purpose, and a sense of dignity she had never known.

"Dante," she murmured, her hand rising to gently rest against his cheek, feeling the slight rough stubble beneath her fingers. "It's dangerous. People will target me to get to you."

"They can try," Dante said softly, his eyes darkening with a fierce, possessive promise. "But to touch you, they will have to go through me first. And as long as I breathe, no one will ever hurt you again."

He tilted his head and covered her lips with his in a deep, slow, possessive kiss.

Elena let out a soft gasp against his mouth, her arms wrapping around his neck as she pulled him closer. The kiss was laced with weeks of unspoken tension, raw desire, and a fierce, unyielding protection. When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against hers, both of them were breathing heavily.

"Friday night," Dante whispered against her lips. "You wear the red dress I had placed in your wardrobe. And you walk down those stairs with me."

Elena looked into his dark, beautiful eyes and surrendered completely. "Okay," she whispered. "Friday night."
