Chapter 6 - A New DawnSix months later.

Spring had returned to New York, bringing blooming cherry blossoms and warm, gentle breezes that blew across the rolling lawns of the Moretti estate. The dark clouds that had hung over the house for years had completely parted, replaced by a sense of peace, strength, and newfound purpose.

The federal investigation into the Moretti syndicate had been entirely dismissed following the exposure of Commissioner Vance's corruption. With the Kellin family dismantled and their assets absorbed, Dante had successfully transitioned the vast majority of his family's holdings into legitimate corporate enterprises—real estate, international shipping, and clean energy investments. The dark underworld still respected his name, but his hands were clean.

In the grand gardens behind the main mansion, white silk canopies had been erected, fluttering gently in the spring breeze. Rows of mahogany chairs were filled with hundreds of guests—not just business partners and politicians, but staff members, local community leaders, and friends.

Standing at the marble alter near the rose fountain was Dante Moretti. He looked impossibly handsome in a dark navy tailored tuxedo, his eyes fixed entirely on the glass doors of the conservatory.

The music shifted to a sweet, soaring string quartet.

The doors opened.

Elena stepped out onto the flower-strewn aisle. She wore an exquisite white lace wedding gown with a flowing train that shimmered like crushed pearls under the morning sun. Her dark hair was styled in soft waves, crowned with a delicate veil of antique silk. She walked down the aisle alone, her head held high, radiating beauty, grace, and an unbreakable inner strength.

She didn't need a father to give her away. She was giving herself—freely, proudly, and completely—to the man who had seen her worth when she was invisible to the world.

When she reached the altar, Dante stepped down to take her hand. His fingers wrapped around hers, warm and rock-steady, as a brilliant smile broke across his usually stern face.

"You look like a dream," Dante whispered, bringing her hand to his lips and kissing her knuckles.

"This is real," Elena whispered back, her eyes shining with happy tears. "Every bit of it."

The officiant spoke words of tradition, honor, and enduring love, but for Dante and Elena, their vows had already been written six months ago in a dark, rain-slicked kitchen at 3:00 a.m. They had pledged their loyalty not with grand words, but with protection, trust, and mutual redemption.

"Do you, Dante Moretti, take Elena Voss to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer, through every storm and every dawn?"

Dante looked into Elena’s eyes, his entire world reflected in their clear brown depths. "I do. With all my heart, and all my life."

"And do you, Elena Voss, take Dante Moretti to be your lawfully wedded husband?"

Elena smiled through her tears, her hand tightening in his. "I do."

"By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."

Dante didn't hesitate. He pulled Elena gently into his arms, dipping her slightly as he brought his lips down onto hers in a deep, passionate kiss that drew thunderous applause and cheers from the crowd. The orchestra burst into a joyous recessional, and petals of white roses rained down around them like soft snow.

Later that evening, as the stars filled the clear night sky, the wedding reception continued in the grand ballroom. But Dante and Elena slipped away, walking hand-in-hand down the quiet service corridor, leaving the music and laughter behind.

They walked into the main kitchen.

It was dark, quiet, and cool. The rain outside had begun to fall again—a soft, gentle spring shower that tapped rhythmically against the tall arched windows. The room smelled of fresh rain, cold marble, and expensive cedarwood.

Elena walked over to the large marble island and sat up on one of the tall bar stools, just as she had six months ago. She looked over at the stainless-steel freezer drawer and let out a soft, amused laugh.

Dante stepped up beside her, placing his hands on either side of her waist, lifting her gently off the stool so she stood directly in front of him. He looked down at her face—smooth, beautiful, free of pain, glowing under the soft moonlight filtering through the windows.

He reached out, his long fingers gently cupping her face, his thumb brushing over her left cheekbone.

"No bruises," Dante whispered softly, his eyes filled with endless warmth.

"No debt," Elena replied softly, resting her hands against his broad chest, feeling the steady, reassuring beat of his heart. "No hiding in the dark."

Dante leaned down, resting his forehead against hers, closing his eyes as he breathed her in.

"Who protected you?" Dante whispered playfully, repeating the echo of the question that had started it all.

May you like

Elena wrapped her arms tightly around his neck, pulling him down into a tender, perfect kiss.

"My husband," she answered against his lips. "The man who locked the door and gave me a home."
