Chapter 2 - THE SECRETS IN THE DUSTThe room smelled of stale lavender, old paper, and time standing still.

A thick layer of dust covered the grand Steinway piano sitting near the floor-to-ceiling windows. On top of the piano sat a framed photograph of Isabella smiling, holding little Daniel on her lap during a sunny afternoon in Central Park.
Lucas walked over, his fingers tracing the dusty glass of the frame.
"I almost joined you tonight, Bella," Lucas whispered into the darkness. "A little girl saved me. She had your eyes... that same fierce, quiet kindness."
Lucas sat down on the piano bench. His mind was racing, connecting threads he had been too blinded by grief to notice three years ago.
The night of the bombing, Lucas was supposed to be in that car with Isabella and Daniel. He had been delayed by ten minutes because Mateo had asked him to review a last-minute land deal in the basement office.
Ten minutes.
If Mateo had orchestrated the bomb, his goal wasn't just to kill Isabella and Daniel—it was to wipe out the entire family in one stroke. But because Lucas had survived, Mateo had been forced to play the loyal brother, waiting patiently for three years while Lucas consolidated the family wealth into clean, legal assets that could easily be inherited by a business partner if Lucas died without a heir.
And now, Lucas had no living heirs.
Except...
Lucas’s eyes snapped open. He remembered something.
Three weeks after the funeral, Mateo had personally handled the legal paperwork regarding Isabella’s personal estate and family trust. Mateo had insisted on archiving all of Isabella’s personal journals and documents, claiming it was too painful for Lucas to look through them.
Lucas stood up, pulled a keycard from his wallet, and opened a concealed wall safe behind a oil painting of the Amalfi coast.
Inside the safe were three thick leather-bound journals belonging to Isabella, which Lucas had retrieved from Mateo’s office months ago but had never possessed the courage to read.
He pulled out the last journal—the one written during the final months of her life.
He sat back down under the soft light of a desk lamp and began turning the yellowed pages.
Page after page was filled with Isabella’s graceful cursive handwriting: notes about Daniel’s first steps, songs she was composing, her dreams for their quiet life after Lucas retired from the family business.
Then, on a page dated two weeks before the explosion, the tone of the writing changed drastically.
October 14th, the entry read.
I am frightened. Lucas thinks we are safe, but I saw something today that I cannot shake. I went to the mansion’s lower accounting office to drop off my charity foundation receipts. Mateo was not at his desk, but his laptop was open. A file was displayed on the screen—a private bank transfer log titled "Project Clean Slate."
I saw names I recognized. The Falcone family. Payments totaling five million dollars sent from an offshore account registered under Mateo’s mother's maiden name.
Why is Mateo sending millions of dollars to our worst enemies? Is he buying peace, or is he buying something else? I tried to ask him about it during dinner, but he laughed it off, telling me I misunderstood corporate finances. But his eyes... he looked at me with such coldness. I haven't told Lucas yet. He loves Mateo like a brother. It would break his heart. I will investigate further tomorrow.
Lucas’s hands shook so violently that the journal almost fell from his grip.
Isabella hadn't been killed by the Falcone syndicate in a random act of mob warfare. She had been murdered because she found out that Mateo Rossi was conspiring with the enemy to eliminate Lucas and take control of the empire.
And Mateo had used the Falcones as a scapegoat, letting Lucas slaughter them over the next three years while Mateo sat back, untouched, waiting for the right moment to finish the job.
"You bastard," Lucas hissed, a cold, lethal rage washing over his soul. "You took my wife. You took my son."
Suddenly, the silent air of the mansion was broken by a soft knock on the piano room door.
Lucas instantly slipped the journal into his jacket, pulled a suppressed 9mm pistol from his shoulder holster, and moved silently toward the entrance.
"Who is it?" he asked smoothly.
"Mr. Moretti?" a timid, trembling voice answered.
It was Sarah.
Lucas unlocked the door and pulled it open slightly. Sarah stood in the hallway, wearing a worn coat over her clothes, looking pale and terrified.
"Sarah? What are you doing out of your room? I told Paulie—"
"Mr. Moretti, please," Sarah whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "Lily is sick again. Her fever is spiking, and her chest is tight. The inhaler she used on you... it was her last one. I tried to ask the guards to let me go to the 24-hour pharmacy down the road, but Mr. Rossi was in the hallway. He... he told the guards that no one is allowed to leave the estate until morning by your orders."
Lucas’s eyes narrowed into slits of ice.
Mateo was trying to let the little girl die. He knew that Lily was a witness to his failed poisoning attempt, and by restricting her medical care, he could eliminate her without firing a single bullet.
"Where is Mateo now?" Lucas asked quietly.
"He went down to the basement security room," Sarah said. "He said he was reviewing the perimeter cameras for tomorrow's meeting."
Lucas reached out, gently patting Sarah’s trembling shoulder. "Go back to your room, Sarah. Lock the door. I am going to get your daughter her medicine right now."
"Thank you, sir... thank you," she sobbed.
Lucas closed the door, walked to his desk, and pulled a hidden satellite phone from a locked drawer. He dialed a private, encrypted number that he hadn't used in three years—the number of Dr. Julian Vance, the chief medical examiner of New York City and a man who owed Lucas his life.
"Julian," Lucas said when the line connected.
"Lucas?" Julian’s voice was shocked. "It’s two in the morning. Is everything alright?"
"I need two things immediately," Lucas stated coldly. "First, bring three doses of pediatric Albuterol and high-grade antibiotics to my estate in Long Island. Use the rear service entrance; my personal guard Paulie will let you in."
"Consider it done. What’s the second thing?"
Lucas looked down at the pink inhaler sitting on his desk.
"I need an immediate chemical analysis on a liquid residue. Someone tried to kill me tonight using an aerosolized neurotoxin or respiratory blocker mixed into my scotch."
May you like
Julian gasped. "My God... Lucas, who?"
"I already know who," Lucas said, his eyes darkening with absolute lethargy. "Just get the medicine here for the little girl. Hurry."
