Chapter 5 - THE FINAL RECKONINGThe courtyard exploded into absolute chaos!

Dozens of masked Falcone gunmen poured out from the back of the armored truck, automatic weapons raised, opening fire on the garden tent!
"Cover the Boss!" Paulie yelled, drawing his weapon and returning fire alongside Lucas’s personal security force.
The syndicate captains, all seasoned veterans of street warfare, instantly drew their weapons, taking cover behind marble pillars, heavy oak tables, and luxury sedans, converting the elegant memorial garden into a brutal warzone!
Muzzle flashes illuminated the dark rainy morning, and the deafening roar of gunfire echoed across the Long Island sound.
Mateo threw his human shield aside and sprinted toward the armored truck, crying out to Marco Falcone, who was firing an assault rifle from the passenger seat. "Marco! Help me! The plan failed! They know everything!"
Marco Falcone looked down at Mateo with pure disgust. "You incompetent fool!"
Lucas, moving with the deadly, precise grace of a man who had survived a hundred battles, did not duck for cover.
He walked steadily through the gunfire, his suppressed 9mm pistol raised.
Thwip! Thwip!
Two Falcone gunmen aiming at Paulie dropped instantly as Lucas’s bullets found their marks.
Lucas pushed forward, his eyes locked entirely on Mateo.
Marco Falcone swung his rifle toward Lucas, aiming for his chest. "Die, Moretti!"
Before Marco could pull the trigger, a loud siren echoed from the driveway, and three unmarked black SUVs tore through the side gates!
The doors flew open, and a squad of heavily armed Federal SWAT agents, led by Special Agent James Vance—Dr. Julian Vance’s brother—poured out, weapons raised!
"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS IMMEDIATELY!" Agent Vance bellowed through a megaphone.
Lucas had not just prepared a mob execution—he had handed full federal wiretaps, financial paper trails, and chemical evidence over to the FBI at 4:00 AM. He was tearing down both Mateo and the Falcones using the absolute weight of the law and iron strength combined.
Caught in a deadly crossfire between Lucas’s loyal captains and the incoming Federal tactical team, the Falcone gunmen began throwing down their weapons and dropping to their knees in surrender.
Marco Falcone tried to scramble out of the truck to run toward the wooded perimeter, but Agent Vance tackled him to the wet grass, slamming handcuffs onto his wrists.
Mateo, seeing his entire world collapse in a matter of seconds, broke into a desperate run toward the cliffside overlook behind the mansion—a two-hundred-foot drop into the rocky, churning ocean waters below.
"Mateo!" Lucas’s voice boomed over the sound of dying gunfire.
Mateo stopped near the edge of the slippery stone cliff, panting heavily, his gun trembling in his hand. He turned around, his back to the abyss, as Lucas walked slowly up the muddy path toward him.
"Stay back, Lucas!" Mateo screamed, wiping sweat and rain from his eyes. "Stay back or I’ll jump! You’ll never get the satisfaction of putting me in a cage!"
Lucas stopped ten feet away. He slowly lowered his handgun, placing it on a flat stone beside him, standing bare-handed in the falling rain.
"I don't want to shoot you, Mateo," Lucas said, his voice eerily calm. "Shooting you is too easy."
Mateo laughed maniacally, tears mixing with the rain on his cheeks. "You think you won, Lucas?! Look at you! Your wife is dead! Your son is dead! You spent three years living like a ghost in an empty house while I spent your money!"
"I lived like a ghost because I was blind," Lucas replied quietly. "But last night, an innocent child showed me that life is still worth fighting for. She gave me air when I was dying. She gave me the truth."
Lucas pulled a small silver pocket watch from his vest—the watch that had belonged to his father, which Mateo had given him as a birthday gift years ago.
Lucas casually tossed the watch over the edge of the cliff. It vanished into the white foam of the ocean far below.
"Your legacy is gone, Mateo," Lucas said softly. "The bank accounts are frozen. The Falcones are arrested. Your name will be remembered in this city as nothing more than a pathetic, greedy rat who murdered a mother and child because he couldn't build anything of his own."
Mateo’s face contorted into an expression of pure, psychotic rage. "I’ll kill you myself!"
Mateo raised his pistol, aiming directly at Lucas’s face!
BANG!
A single, high-powered sniper shot rang out from the mansion’s second-floor balcony.
The bullet struck Mateo’s right wrist with surgical precision. His gun flew out of his hand, shattering against the rocks. Mateo screamed in agony, clutching his ruined hand, losing his balance on the slippery, wet edge of the muddy cliff!
"No! No!" Mateo shrieked as his feet slipped off the mud!
He reached out wildly with his left hand, grabbing onto the exposed root of a pine tree hanging over the abyss, his body dangling helplessly over the two-hundred-foot drop into the roaring ocean!
"Lucas! Help me! Please!" Mateo sobbed, his fingers slipping on the wet root. "We were brothers! Remember when we were kids?! Please, Lucas! Don't let me fall!"
Lucas walked to the edge of the cliff. He looked down at the man who had destroyed his life, who had murdered his family, and who had tried to let a sick little girl die in the dark.
Lucas reached down. For a split second, Mateo’s eyes lit up with desperate hope, thinking Lucas was going to grab his hand.
Instead, Lucas picked up the fallen pink inhaler that he had kept in his jacket pocket, looking down at it, then looking back at Mateo.
"Mercy," Lucas said quietly, "is something you have to earn, Mateo. And you ran out of air a long time ago."
"LUCAS! NO—!"
The wet root snapped.
Mateo’s terror-filled scream echoed down the rocky gorge before being completely swallowed by the crash of the ocean waves below.
He vanished into the dark, churning water, never to be seen again.

Lucas stood on the edge of the cliff in the falling rain, taking a long, deep, cleansing breath of fresh air.
The nightmare was finally over.
