Chapter 3 - THE WEB UNRAVELSBy dawn the following morning, the storm had passed, leaving behind a crisp, cold sky over the city. But inside the walls of St. Jude’s Private Hospital, the atmosphere was fraught with intense medical and legal activity.

Sebastian sat in a leather armchair in the corner of Room 402, holding his mother’s frail hand. Teresa was propped up on clean white pillows, an IV drip feeding fluids and pain medication into her veins. Her face was still pale, but the oxygen cannula had been removed, and her breathing was steady.
The door softly opened, and Dr. Chen stepped inside, carrying a thick medical folder.
“How is she, Michael?” Sebastian asked softly, carefully letting go of his mother’s hand as Teresa slept peacefully under the sedation.
Dr. Chen motioned for Sebastian to step into the adjoining private lounge. Once the heavy door was clicked shut, Dr. Chen’s face darkened significantly.
“Sebastian... I’ve completed the full forensic assessment,” Dr. Chen said, handing over the medical report. “The physical injuries are extensive. She has three cracked ribs on her left side that are at least three weeks old. They were left completely untreated, meaning they were setting incorrectly, causing her agonizing pain every time she breathed or moved.”
Sebastian opened the file, his eyes scanning the horrifying medical jargon.
“Furthermore,” Dr. Chen continued, pointing to a section of the lab results, “we found high concentrations of a prescription sedative in her bloodstream. It’s a powerful tranquilizer usually reserved for severe psychiatric patients in clinical settings.”
“She was being drugged?” Sebastian’s voice dropped into a dangerous register.
“Systematically,” Dr. Chen confirmed. “In small doses mixed into her daily tea. It was enough to cause extreme lethargy, confusion, and loss of physical balance. That explains why she was falling so often. It wasn't just her knee replacement or her osteoporosis, Sebastian. She was being chemically incapacitated so she couldn't fight back or seek help when you were away.”
Sebastian sat down heavily on the lounge sofa, rubbing his forehead with both hands. The sheer cruelty of the operation was staggering. Veronica hadn't just mistreated his mother out of frustration or malice; she had executed a cold, calculated campaign to break Teresa physically and mentally, ensuring she would remain helpless and silent.
At that moment, the door opened again, and standard-bearer corporate attorney Richard Sterling walked into the room. Sterling was the head of Sebastian’s global legal counsel—a man known for his ruthless legal strategy and absolute loyalty to the Walker family.
“Sebastian,” Sterling said, pulling a series of bound legal briefs from his leather briefcase. “We’ve executed search warrants on Veronica’s personal residence records, her private cloud drives, and her safe deposit boxes at First National Bank.”
“What did you find, Richard?”
“It was an elaborate network, Sebastian,” Sterling revealed, laying out a chart on the coffee table. “Veronica wasn't acting alone, and she wasn't just working with Arthur. Eighteen months ago, Veronica hired a private wealth management firm in Zurich to construct a series of blind trusts. She had been systematically forging your signature on guarantee documents for corporate loans.”
Sterling pointed to a series of bank statements. “She was using your company’s line of credit to secure personal assets—villas in the South of France, private jewelry vaults in Geneva, and real estate developments in Dubai. But to execute the final transfer of ownership, she needed total control over your personal estate in the event of your death or incapacity.”
“And my mother was the primary beneficiary of my personal trust,” Sebastian realized aloud.
“Exactly,” Sterling nodded. “If something had happened to you during one of your frequent international trips, your mother would have inherited sixty percent of the voting shares in Walker Hospitality. Veronica knew that if Teresa was deemed mentally incompetent by a court, Veronica, as the mother of your children and your legal spouse, would automatically be appointed as the sole conservator of both your mother and the estate.”
The puzzle was finally complete. The abuse, the isolation, the forced labor, the drugs—it was all designed to create a documented history of mental and physical decline. If Teresa broke down completely, Veronica would take everything.
“And the twins?” Sebastian asked, his heart sinking. “Why was she tying them to my mother’s back?”
Sterling’s expression turned solemn. “We retrieved an audio file from Veronica’s phone. It was a recording of a conversation between Veronica and Arthur from two weeks ago. Veronica was deliberately attempting to create physical exhaustion in your mother while she was holding the children. She was hoping Teresa would suffer a catastrophic fall with the babies, allowing Veronica to claim that Teresa was an immediate physical danger to her grandchildren, justifying permanent institutionalization.”
A cold, terrifying chill ran down Sebastian’s spine. Veronica had been willing to put her own eight-month-old sons in direct physical danger just to secure a legal victory over a defenseless sixty-seven-year-old woman.
“Where is Veronica now?” Sebastian asked, his voice shaking with a dangerous intensity.
“She was formally arrested two hours ago,” Sterling replied. “The police removed her from your estate in handcuffs. She’s currently being held at the county central booking facility. The charges filed by the District Attorney include felony elder abuse, aggravated assault, grand larceny, conspiracy to commit corporate fraud, and child endangerment.”
“Is she eligible for bail?”
“The DA set bail at twenty-five million dollars, given her flight risk and foreign assets,” Sterling said. “However, I personally filed an emergency petition with the High Chancery Court this morning. I’ve frozen all of her accounts, revoked her passport, and placed a temporary injunction on every asset tied to her name. She doesn't have twenty-five dollars, let alone twenty-five million.”
Sebastian stood up, walking over to the window that looked out over the hospital courtyard. In the garden below, he saw families walking together in the morning sunlight—grandparents holding the hands of their small grandchildren, laughing without a care in the world.
He had spent the last ten years chasing growth projections, acquiring luxury properties across three continents, trying to prove to the world that the poor boy from the inner city could become a king. But in his pursuit of kingdom, he had left the gates unguarded.
“Richard,” Sebastian said, turning around.
“Yes, Sebastian?”
“I want the most ruthless team of family lawyers in the country assigned to the divorce and custody proceedings. I want Veronica stripped of every parental right she possesses over Noah and Luke. I don't want her to ever see those boys again, not even through a glass partition in a visitation room.”
“Consider it done,” Sterling said. “And what about the corporate side? The board meeting is scheduled for two o'clock this afternoon. The news of Arthur’s arrest has already leaked to the financial press. Walker Hospitality stock is down fourteen percent in pre-market trading.”
Sebastian tightened his tie and pulled on his suit jacket. “Call a press conference at the corporate headquarters for one o'clock. I will address the board, the press, and the shareholders personally.”
“Are you sure you’re ready for that?” Sterling asked carefully. “The media is going to turn this into a sensational circus.”

Sebastian looked back through the glass window into the hospital room, where his mother was just beginning to stir, her eyes slowly opening as she looked around for her son.
“Let them come,” Sebastian said quietly. “It’s time to tell the truth.”
