Chapter 1 - The Trail of Cold GoldThe shattered glass in Times Square was swept away by city sanitation within thirty minutes, but Alejandro Del Valle’s private security detail was faster. Before the street cleaners arrived, four men in dark suits under the command of Marcus Vance—Alejandro’s chief of security and former intelligence officer—had cordoned off the sidewalk under the guise of an emergency hazardous spill.

Using sterile swab kits and specialized micro-sponges, Marcus’s team gathered every drop of the golden residue lingering on the concrete and trapped within the glass shards. Within two hours, the samples were resting inside a temperature-controlled titanium bio-hazard case in the subterranean laboratories of Del Valle Bio-Pharm in Manhattan.
"I don't care what it costs, Dr. Evans," Alejandro ordered, pacing the length of the glass-walled lab while holding Sofia, who was fast asleep on a leather couch nearby. "Break down every single compound, every trace element, every plant DNA sequence in that fluid. I want the exact chemical blueprint by morning."
Dr. Aris Evans, a renowned pharmacologist lured away from Johns Hopkins by Alejandro’s millions, stared at the preliminary mass spectrometry readouts with wide eyes. "Mr. Del Valle, this... this defies conventional organic chemistry. There are standard active compounds here—extracts of rare wild ginseng, hyper-concentrated mountain honey, and blue cohosh—but there is an unidentified protein structure that accelerates neuro-synaptic pathways at a rate we’ve only theorized in quantum biology. It literally bypasses vocal cord paralysis by stimulating dormant neural tissue in the brainstem."
Alejandro’s eyes gleamed. "Can we synthesize it?"
"Without knowing the exact origin of the botanical base, synthesis would take years of trial and error," Dr. Evans admitted. "The raw plant matter must come from a very specific, isolated micro-climate. Whoever made this didn't buy these ingredients at a health store. They harvested them."
Alejandro turned to Marcus. "Find the girl."
"We've already run facial recognition through the city's traffic camera network, sir," Marcus replied, pulling up a high-resolution file on an iPad. "Her name is Lily Miller, seven years old. She lives with her older brother, Caleb Miller, in a low-income housing unit in Queens. They moved here four months ago from an isolated hollow in Harlan County, Kentucky. Their grandmother, Ruth Miller, passed away six months ago. She was a well-known herbalist in the Appalachian backcountry."
"And the brother?" Alejandro asked coldly.
"Caleb is twenty-two. He works night shifts at a freight dock and takes odd carpentry jobs to keep them afloat. They have no money, no powerful relatives, and no legal protection."
Alejandro looked down at his daughter, whose quiet, even breathing filled the room. The miracle had happened, but its source was finite. Sofia had taken one sip, but Dr. Evans cautioned that full, permanent vocal stabilization would require a complete course of the remedy. More importantly, Alejandro saw the bigger picture: millions of non-verbal children worldwide. A patent on this formula would not just add billions to his empire—it would make him immortal in the medical industry.
"Prepare the contract," Alejandro said quietly to his legal counsel. "We offer the brother a lump sum for the full recipe and rights. Fifty thousand dollars."

"Sir," his attorney murmured, "for a cure worth billions, fifty thousand is—"
"Fifty thousand to a starving kid from Kentucky is a fortune," Alejandro interrupted, his tone chillingly practical. "If he refuses, buy the building they live in, evict them, and make sure he can't find work in this state. He will sell us that recipe, one way or another."
