Chapter 4 - The Poisoned BetTwo weeks later, the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was filled with New York’s elite. Investors, medical pioneers, politicians, and high-society journalists gathered under crystalline chandeliers for Del Valle Bio-Pharm's secret announcement.

Alejandro stood at the podium in a tailored tuxedo, looking out over the crowd with supreme confidence. Sofia sat in the front row with her nanny, wearing a beautiful pink dress, looking around with bright, curious eyes. Since taking the initial sip from Lily's bottle, her speech had stayed stable, though she still spoke sparingly, often asking for "the little girl with the braids."

"Ladies and gentlemen," Alejandro spoke into the microphone, his voice echoing with authority. "Tonight, we announce a breakthrough that will rewrite the history of pediatric neurology. Vanguard-1—our revolutionary new oral therapeutic—will give a voice to millions of non-verbal children across the globe."

Behind him, a massive LED screen displayed a high-tech video render of the synthetic chemical compound, followed by financial projections showing projected annual revenues exceeding five billion dollars. The room erupted into applause. Private equity representatives were already pulling out phones to place orders for the upcoming IPO.

"To demonstrate its complete safety and instantaneous effect," Alejandro announced, "we have prepared a live demonstration using our refined, lab-synthesized formulation."

Dr. Evans stepped onto the stage holding a velvet box containing a crystal vial filled with a brilliant, glowing golden liquid—the synthetic clone of Ruth Miller’s remedy.

"Our first honorary recipient," Alejandro declared, smiling down at his daughter, "will be my own child, Sofia, who took her first steps into speech thanks to our initial research."

The crowd cheered. Alejandro motioned for Sofia to be brought onto the stage.

Sofia looked frightened by the bright lights and flashing cameras. As Dr. Evans opened the vial, Sofia looked up at her father and shook her head.

"No, Daddy," she whispered, her small voice picked up by the microphone. "Not that one. It smells wrong."

"It's okay, sweetheart," Alejandro murmured under his breath, holding her shoulder gently but firmly. "It's the same medicine. Just one sip for the cameras."

He reached for the glass spoon.

"I wouldn't give her that if I were you, Del Valle."

A loud, clear voice cut through the applause. The double doors at the back of the ballroom swung open.

Caleb Miller walked down the central aisle. He was dressed not in his work flannel, but in a tailored black suit provided by the elderly man walking beside him—Silas O’Malley himself, flanked by six armed private security guards and two federal agents from the Food and Drug Administration.

The crowd gasped. Security guards rushed toward Caleb, but Silas O’Malley raised a single hand, stopping them in their tracks.

"Alejandro," Silas said, his voice like grinding stones. "Your ambition has finally blinded you to basic reality."

"What is the meaning of this intrusion?!" Alejandro shouted, his face darkening with rage. "Remove these people!"

"You stole my grandmother's journal," Caleb said, walking right up to the stage. "We let your men take it because we knew your greed would force you to synthesize the formula in a lab instead of respecting the natural balance of the plants."

Caleb turned to Dr. Evans. "Doctor, run a quick mass spectrometry test on the synthetic batch in your hand right now. Check for the denatured protein chain."

Dr. Evans, visibly sweating under the pressure, pulled a mobile testing scanner from his kit and dipped a strip into the vial. Within five seconds, the digital display flashed bright red: CRITICAL TOXICITY WARNING - PARALYTIC RESIDUE DETECTED.

Dr. Evans dropped the spoon in horror. "My God... it’s toxic! The synthetic resin mutated during chemical bonding!"

The ballroom erupted into instant chaos. Journalists began snapping pictures furiously. Investors froze in horror. Alejandro stood frozen on stage, staring at the red screen on the scanner, realizing he had almost administered a paralyzing toxin to his own daughter for the sake of a corporate photo opportunity.
