Chapter 5 - The Reckoning of Harlan CountyThe fallout was immediate and catastrophic.

By the next morning, news of the attempted fraudulent press conference and the stolen journal swept Wall Street. Del Valle Bio-Pharm's stock plunged by 70% in pre-market trading. Federal authorities launched an immediate investigation into illegal corporate espionage and unapproved human trials.

Alejandro sat alone in his vast, empty penthouse. His lawyers had abandoned him, his board of directors was preparing to vote him out, and his fortune was evaporating by the hour. But the worst blow came from inside his own home.

Sofia refused to come out of her room. She did not yell or cry; she simply sat by the window, looking at a picture of Lily she had drawn on a piece of paper.

"She won't speak to you, sir," the nanny said softly to Alejandro outside the nursery door. "She says you tried to hurt the mountain girl's memory."

Alejandro sank into a chair in the hallway, burying his face in his hands. For six years, he had believed his anger was driven by love for his daughter. But standing on that stage at the Plaza Hotel, ready to risk her safety for a stock surge, he finally saw himself for what he had become: a man who measured miracles in dollars and human lives in leverage.

His phone rang. It was Silas O’Malley.

"If you want to save your daughter’s complete recovery, Del Valle, you need to leave New York," Silas said without introduction. "The synthetic dose she took in Times Square was only a starter. The cure requires three natural doses over six months. And the only place those plants grow is in Harlan County, Kentucky."

"Will Caleb even see me?" Alejandro asked, his voice hollow, stripped of all former arrogance.

"Caleb won't see a billionaire," Silas replied. "He might see a father who has finally run out of pride."

Twenty-four hours later, a single private helicopter landed on a clearing atop a mist-shrouded ridge in the Appalachian Mountains. Alejandro stepped out onto the damp earth, carrying Sofia in his arms. He wore plain clothes, no security detail, and no corporate armor.

The air smelled of wild pine, damp limestone, and blooming goldenrod.

A small, hand-built wooden cabin sat at the edge of the hollow. On the porch sat Caleb Miller, carving a block of cedar wood, while Lily played in the dirt near a patch of wild yellow flowers.

Alejandro walked up the dirt path, his shoes covered in mud. He stopped ten feet from the porch and lowered his head.

"I am not here with lawyers," Alejandro said quietly, his voice shaking. "I am not here with money. I returned your grandmother's journal to the authorities, and I have resigned from my company."

He looked up at Caleb, tears finally breaking through his dark eyes. "I am sorry, Caleb. I shoved your sister. I destroyed your grandmother's work. I tried to steal what belonged to the earth. I don't care about the patent. I don't care about the company. Just help my daughter finish her healing. I will pay whatever penance you demand."
