Chapter 2 - The Fall of Brandon Hayes

Brandon burst into a loud, obnoxious laugh, crossing his arms over his chest as he shook his head in disbelief. "Protocol Vanguard? What kind of bargain-bin action movie nonsense is that? You really think playing pretend with an oversized walkie-talkie is going to scare me, old man? I own three regional logistics firms. I have a net worth of twelve million dollars. You’re a nobody in a thrift-store jacket!"
My father didn't reply. He stood near the foot of my bed like an immovable iron monument, his arms folded behind his back, his sharp blue eyes fixed on the digital clock mounted on the hospital wall.
Ten seconds passed. Then twenty.
Brandon sneered, reaching into his tailored trousers to pull out his sleek smartphone. "Watch this. I'm calling my security team to throw you out of this hospital, and then I'm calling my lawyer to draft the eviction papers for your useless daughter."
He tapped his phone screen, but before he could press the call button, his phone began to ring aggressively. The caller ID displayed the name of his chief financial officer.
"See? Business doesn't sleep," Brandon smirked, answering the call on speakerphone to show off. "What is it, Marcus? I'm in the middle of dealing with—"
"Brandon, what the hell is happening?!" Marcus’s voice shrieked through the phone speaker, choked with absolute panic. "Our corporate treasury accounts just got wiped clean! The Department of Justice, the IRS Criminal Investigation Division, and the Department of Defense Logistics Agency just froze every single operational bank account we own!"
Brandon’s smug expression froze. "What? That’s impossible! It’s a bank glitch—"
"It’s not a glitch!" Marcus shouted, sirens faintly wailing in the background of his end of the call. "Federal agents just walked into our corporate headquarters with a federal seizure warrant! They’re confiscating all servers, locking down the warehouses, and revoking our commercial transport licenses! Our stock value plummeted ninety-eight percent in forty-five seconds! Brandon, we are completely ruined! Who did you piss off?!"
The phone slipped through Brandon’s suddenly clammy fingers, clattering loudly against the cold linoleum floor. The color drained from his face until he looked as pale as the hospital sheets.
Before he could process the shock, the television mounted in the corner of the recovery room automatically flicked on. A breaking news banner flashed across the screen in bold red letters: HAYES LOGISTICS UNDER FEDERAL INVESTIGATION FOR MASSIVE FRAUD AND NATIONAL SECURITY VIOLATIONS. ASSETS FROZEN NATIONWIDE.
Brandon’s phone, lying on the floor, lit up continuously with dozens of rapid notifications. Personal Account #4091: Frozen. Lines of Credit: Revoked. Amex Black Card: Cancelled.
Panicking, Brandon lunged for his phone, frantically opening his mobile banking app. A bright red prompt covered the screen: ACCOUNT SEIZED BY FEDERAL ORDER.
"No... no, no, no! This can't be happening!" Brandon stammered, his body visibly shaking as sweat broke out across his forehead. He stared at his phone, then slowly looked up at my father, whose face remained an unreadable mask of absolute authority. "What... what did you do?"
My father took one measured step forward. The air in the room suddenly felt heavy, suffocating, and charged with lethal tension.
"I spent thirty-five years serving this nation, son," Dad said, his voice dropping into a deep, gravelly register that commanded absolute obedience. "I built the intelligence networks that keep supply lines moving. Did you truly believe a low-tier subcontractor like yourself built an empire on your own talent? Every contract you won over the last five years was quietly granted because my former officers thought you were treating my daughter like a queen."

Brandon gasped, his jaw dropping as the horrifying realization crashed over him. "You... you were my shadow benefactor?"
"I was," my father cold-stated. "And now, I am your reckoning. You put your hands on my daughter. You struck a mother holding her newborn child. You signed your own death warrant the second your hand made contact with her face."
