Chapter 3 - Erased

The door to the recovery room flew open with a sharp, heavy thud. Four men in tailored dark suits, carrying tactical earpieces and wearing silver federal badges on their belts, marched into the room with crisp, military precision.

Brandon flinched, instinctively backing away until his spine hit the wall. "Who are you people?! Get out of here! I have rights!"

The lead agent completely ignored Brandon. He walked straight up to my father, snapped his heels together, and executed a sharp, perfect military salute. "General Vance, sir! Task Force Alpha has completed the primary objective. Mr. Hayes’s assets are fully frozen, his commercial licenses are permanently revoked, and the foreclosure process on his residential properties has been expedited."

Brandon’s eyes bulged in pure terror. "General?! You... you’re a retired clerk!"

"General Arthur Vance," the lead agent corrected coldly, turning his gaze toward Brandon with utter disdain. "Former Commander of Special Operations Command. And as of two minutes ago, Mr. Hayes, you are being served with an immediate emergency restraining order, an order of eviction, and a federal summons for commercial fraud."

The agent thrust a thick stack of legal documents against Brandon’s chest. Brandon was shaking so violently he couldn't even hold the papers; they spilled onto the floor around his shoes.

"Get him out of my sight," my father commanded softly, stepping beside my bed and gently placing his hand on my shoulder. His thumb rubbed my arm reassuringly, his touch instantly warm and protective.

"Wait! Clara, please!" Brandon dropped to his knees, his arrogant pride completely shattered as tears of panic streamed down his face. He reached out toward my bed, trying to grab the edge of my blanket. "Clara, talk to him! Tell him I’m sorry! I was confused! The stress of the business... the baby's eye color... I lost my temper! I didn't mean it!"

I pulled my blanket away from his reach, looking down at the man I had endured for years. For seven long, painful years, I had walked on eggshells, enduring his verbal abuse, his narcissism, and his endless belittling of my family just to keep my home intact for my daughters. Seeing him on his knees, weeping like a coward, felt like a heavy iron cage falling away from my chest.

"You said my baby and I could rot on the streets, Brandon," I said, my voice steady, clear, and devoid of any pity. "You claimed I cheated simply because my son inherited the exact blue eyes of the grandfather you looked down upon. Take your paternity test if you want. But you will do it from the absolute bottom of the pit you dug for yourself."

"Clara! Please! I have nothing left!" Brandon sobbed as two federal agents grabbed him by his armpits, yanking him effortlessly to his feet.

"You have four daughters who need to be protected from a toxic father," my father added coldly. "Agents, remove him from the hospital grounds. If he sets foot within five hundred yards of my daughter or my grandchildren again, execute Warrant Delta."

"Sir, yes, sir!" the agents barked. They dragged Brandon out of the room, his frantic screams and pathetic pleas echoing down the sterile hospital hallway until the heavy fire doors slammed shut, cutting off his voice forever.

My father turned to me, his cold posture instantly melting away into the gentle, loving father I had known my entire life. He leaned down, kissed my forehead tenderly, and looked down at his newborn grandson.

"Are you okay, sweetheart?" Dad asked softly.

Tears finally spilled over my lashes, but for the first time in years, they weren't tears of fear. They were tears of pure relief. "I am now, Dad. I am now."
