Chapter 4 - The Underground Labyrinth"You're making a massive mistake," Sarah said, forcing her voice to remain steady even as her adrenaline surged, screaming at her to bolt. "The perimeter alarms are tripped the moment you touch anything in this wing. Richard knows I'm awake."

Marcus laughed—a dry, humorless sound that echoed off the high vaulted ceilings. "Richard is currently reviewing useless corporate restructuring files in the east wing, completely unaware that his precious estate is built on a network of tunnels his grandfather designed during the bootlegging days. By the time he realizes you're missing, you and I are going to have a very private conversation about discretion."
He lunged forward with terrifying speed.
Sarah didn't wait. She spun around and sprinted down the long gallery toward the grand staircase, her flats slapping frantically against the hardwood. Behind her, heavy boots thundered against the floorboards. Marcus was closing the distance fast, his breath hot and ragged in the confined space of the hallway.
She ducked into an alcove housing a massive marble bust of a 19th-century Moreland patriarch, throwing her weight against it just as Marcus rounded the corner. The heavy marble statue tipped forward, crashing down directly into Marcus’s path.
Marcus shouted a curse as he tripped over the heavy stone pedestal, sprawling hard onto the floor and smashing his shoulder against the wainscoting.
Sarah didn't look back. She pushed through the heavy service door leading down to the basement kitchens, slamming the deadbolt home behind her just as Marcus’s fists hammered against the wood.
The basement was a maze of industrial freezers, stacked storage crates, and concrete pillars. The air smelled of damp stone and old wine. Sarah knew she had to find the main stairwell leading up to the residential quarters, but in the dim emergency lighting, every corridor looked identical.
Suddenly, a heavy hand clamped over her mouth from behind, cutting off her gasp, and an arm wrapped securely around her waist, dragging her backward into the deep shadows behind a row of towering wine racks.
She flailed wildly, bringing her heel down hard against her attacker's shin.
"Sarah! Stop, it's me!"
A familiar, deep voice whispered frantically against her ear.
Richard Moreland spun her around, his hands gripping her shoulders tightly, his dark eyes wide with frantic panic. He was breathing heavily, holding a heavy-duty tactical flashlight in one hand and a loaded Smith & Wesson revolver in the other.
"Richard?" Sarah gasped, pressing her hand against her chest as her heart hammered against her ribs. "Marcus... Marcus is in the west wing. He’s accessing Clara’s safe. He knows about the tunnels!"
"I know," Richard said grimly, his jaw clenched so tight a muscle ticked in his cheek. "The silent alarm in the west wing archive finally triggered on my tablet three minutes ago. I’ve already locked down the entire subterranean perimeter. There's nowhere for him to run."

Before Richard could finish his sentence, a loud, metallic explosion echoed from the far end of the basement corridor, followed by the blinding flash of a small incendiary device detonating near the main electrical junction box.
The overhead emergency lights flickered, sputtered, and died entirely, plunging the basement into absolute pitch-black darkness.
