Chapter 5 - The Confrontation in the DarkThe only illumination came from the narrow, piercing beam of Richard’s tactical flashlight as it cut through swirling clouds of gray smoke drifting down from the utility corridor.

"Stay behind me," Richard commanded, his voice dropping into the cold, authoritative tone of a man who had faced corporate warfare and underworld threats long before he ever built his tech empire.
"I'm not hiding, Richard," Sarah whispered fiercely, stepping up beside him, her eyes adjusting to the shadows. "Marcus has the encryption keys to Clara’s safe and the foundation accounts. If he escapes through the utility tunnel, all of Victoria's crimes walk out with him."
"He's not escaping," a cold voice echoed from the darkness ahead.
From behind a concrete support pillar near the old wine cellar entrance, Marcus Sterling stepped into the beam of the flashlight. He looked disheveled, his tie torn, holding a small digital hard drive in one hand and a heavy-caliber Glock pistol pointed directly at Richard's chest in the other.
"Put the gun down, Richard," Marcus sneered, his eyes wild with desperate adrenaline. "You're a brilliant industrialist, but you always were too soft for the real world. You trusted Victoria, you trusted your board, and now you brought some random agency nanny into your home to play mommy while your empire burns around you."
"Drop the weapon, Marcus," Richard said calmly, his pistol locked steadily on Marcus's center mass. "You're surrounded. The federal marshals are sealing the exit vents right now."
"Let me walk, Richard," Marcus hissed, taking a step backward toward the hidden iron gate of the Prohibition-era tunnel. "Give me the chopper keys on the roof and a clear run to Teterboro, and maybe—just maybe—I won't tell the press about what really happened to Clara's medical files."
Richard’s expression darkened into something terrifying. "What did you say?"
Marcus laughed nervously, his grip on the gun shaking slightly. "Oh, you didn't know? Victoria didn't act alone, Richie. Clara was starting to ask too many questions about the foundation transfers. A little altered dosage here, a delayed prescription there..."
Before Marcus could finish his sentence, Sarah moved with blinding, unexpected speed.
Instead of freezing, she lunged forward, grabbing a heavy wooden crate of vintage Bordeaux off a nearby tasting table and hurling it directly at Marcus’s knees.
The heavy crate slammed into Marcus's shins with a sickening crunch. His legs buckled beneath him, his aim deflected upward, and his pistol fired into the stone ceiling, showering the basement in sparks and concrete dust.
Richard didn't hesitate for a microsecond. He closed the distance in two massive strides, slamming the butt of his revolver against Marcus's temple with crushing force.
Marcus collapsed onto the concrete floor like a felled tree, unconscious before he hit the ground, the digital hard drive clattering away across the flagstones.

Richard stood over him for a moment, chest heaving, before dropping his gun back into its shoulder holster. He turned around slowly, his eyes finding Sarah in the dim, smoky light.
Without a word, Richard pulled her into his arms, burying his face in her hair. Sarah wrapped her arms around his waist, pressing her face against his chest, feeling the frantic, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat settling down in the dark.
