Chapter 10 - A NEW DAWNSix months later.

The warm Mediterranean breeze rustled the sheer linen curtains of our private villa in the South of France. Below the terrace, the bright blue waters of the sea sparkled under the afternoon sun, painting a picture of absolute serenity.

I stood on the terrace, watching Isabella laugh as she played on the lush green lawn with our son, Luca. He was nearly a year old now, healthy, energetic, and babbling with joyful baby noise as he chased a colorful ball across the grass.

Isabella looked radiant. The color in her cheeks was vibrant, her eyes sparkled with health and happiness, and the dark memories of her mother’s betrayal had finally softened into a distant, closed chapter of our lives. She was strong, confident, and whole again.

She caught me watching her from the terrace, wiping a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear, and blew me a sweet kiss before scooping Luca up into her arms and walking up the stone steps toward me.

"He just took three steps without falling!" Isabella announced proudly, her face beaming as she reached the top of the terrace. "Did you see him, Vincent? Three whole steps!"

"I saw," I smiled, stepping forward to wrap my arm around her waist, kissing her cheek before gently rucking Luca’s soft hair. "He’s getting stronger every day. Just like his mother."

Isabella rested her head against my shoulder, looking out over the sparkling ocean horizon. "Sometimes it feels like a bad dream. Everything that happened last year... it feels so far away now."

"It is far away," I reassured her gently, squeezing her waist. "That dark chapter is closed forever. No one will ever threaten this family again. I give you my word."

Her phone chimed softly from the teak table nearby. It was a news alert notification from back home. She picked it up and glanced at the screen for a brief second.

The headline read: 'Evelyn Vance Formally Sentenced to 30 Years in Maximum Security State Penitentiary Without Parole.'

Isabella stared at the headline for a long moment. There were no tears in her eyes, no sudden wave of sadness or anger—only a deep, quiet sense of closure. She turned off the screen, set the phone back down on the table face-down, and turned back to me with a warm, genuine smile.

"What are you thinking about?" I asked softly.

"I’m thinking about our future," Isabella replied, looking at our sleeping son cradled safely in her arms, and then up into my eyes. "I’m thinking about how lucky we are. Everyone thought my mother was the saint and you were the monster, Vincent. But they were looking at the wrong place all along."

She reached up, pressing a warm, loving kiss to my lips.

"You saved my life," she whispered against my mouth. "You protected our son. You gave us a future."

"I protected what belongs to me," I smiled, holding her close against my chest as the warm French sun bathed the terrace in golden light. "And I always will."

Together, we looked out over the endless blue ocean, leaving the darkness of the past far behind us, stepping into a bright, safe, and unbroken future.

THE END
