Chapter 5 - THE MOUSETRAPThe trap was set for Sunday afternoon.

Evelyn had organized a small, exclusive "charity tea" at our estate, inviting a select group of high-society women, local journalists, and wealthy board members from her favorite philanthropic foundation. She told me it was to "raise awareness for postpartum health," but I knew her real motivation: she wanted an room full of influential witnesses to observe how frail and unstable Isabella supposedly was.
By 2:00 PM, the grand living room was filled with women dressed in designer dresses, sipping champagne and eating delicate sandwiches. Evelyn commanded the room like a grand monarch, holding Luca in her arms while accepting sympathetic smiles and glowing compliments from the guests.
"She’s just an absolute saint," I heard Mrs. Montgomery, a prominent city socialite, whisper to her friend. "Taking care of the baby, running the estate, looking after poor Isabella... I don't know where Vincent would be without her."
"A true angel," her friend agreed, nodding in admiration.
I watched from the grand staircase, sipping a glass of sparkling water, exchanging a brief glance with Marcus, who was standing by the front entrance dressed in a formal suit. He gave me a slight nod. Everything was in place.
Evelyn stepped to the center of the room, raising her crystal glass to command attention.
"Thank you, everyone, for coming today," Evelyn began, her voice quivering with performative emotion. "As many of you know, my sweet daughter Isabella has had a very difficult recovery since bringing little Luca into the world. Her mind and body have suffered so much. It breaks my heart to see her struggle, but as her mother, I will stay by her side for as long as it takes... even if she isn't always herself these days."
A collective murmur of sympathy rippled through the gathered crowd.
"In fact," Evelyn continued, dabbing at a non-existent tear with a lace handkerchief, "I’ve invited our family attorney, Mr. Harrison, here today to help us begin discussing legal guardianship arrangements for sweet Luca, just in case Isabella needs to be admitted to a private residential care facility for her own safety and recovery."
I smirked internally. She was moving faster than I anticipated, trying to seal the deal right in front of her social peers.
Right on cue, the heavy double doors at the top of the grand staircase creaked open.
Every eye in the room turned upward.
Isabella walked out onto the landing. She wasn't wearing the faded nightgowns or silk robes she had been confined to for weeks. She wore an exquisite, tailor-made emerald green dress that hugged her healthy figure, high heels, and flawless makeup. Her hair cascaded in brilliant dark waves over her shoulders. She looked breathtaking, powerful, and completely, undeniably healthy.
A sudden, sharp hush fell over the room.
Evelyn’s eyes widened in sheer horror. Her hand holding the glass began to visibly shake as she stared at her daughter, who looked nothing like the dying woman she had left in bed two hours ago.
"Isabella?" Evelyn gasped, her sweet facade slipping for a brief second. "Sweetheart... what are you doing out of bed? You’re confused... you should be resting—"
"I’ve rested enough, Mother," Isabella’s voice echoed down the marble staircase, clear, confident, and ringing with absolute authority.
Isabella slowly descended the stairs, her eyes locked onto Evelyn like a hawk hunting its prey. The guests parted nervously, sensing the sudden, dramatic shift in the air.
"You told everyone here that I am unstable," Isabella said, reaching the bottom floor and walking straight toward her mother. "You told them my mind is failing. But the only thing failing here, Mother, is your wicked plan."
"Isabella, please! You’re having another episode!" Evelyn cried out, turning to the guests with desperate hands outstretched. "You see? The postpartum paranoia is getting worse! Vincent, do something! Control your wife!"

I slowly walked down from the stairs, taking my place directly beside my wife, sliding my arm securely around her waist.
"I am controlling the situation, Evelyn," I said, my voice echoing coldly across the silent room. "In fact, I’m controlling every single detail of it."
