Chapter 3 - CHEMICAL BETRAYALAt 11:45 AM, I sat in the private back room of my downtown club, The Obsidian. The atmosphere was silent except for the gentle hum of the air purifier and the rhythmic ticking of my pocket watch. Marcus walked in, his face solemn, holding a manila folder sealed with red tape.

He set the file down on the heavy oak table before me. "Dr. Mercer ran the panel twice to be absolutely certain, Mr. Moretti. The results are conclusive."
I opened the folder. Inside were pages of chemical breakdowns, medical charts, and a bolded summary written at the bottom of the cover page.
"Digitalis extract," I read aloud, my voice terrifyingly calm. "Liquid foxglove."
"Yes, sir," Marcus explained. "In small, diluted micro-doses, it causes severe nausea, extreme dizziness, chronic fatigue, memory confusion, and elevated heart rate—symptoms that perfectly mimic severe postpartum depression and physical relapse. But if administered consistently over several weeks to someone already recovering from major physical trauma..."
"It causes heart failure," I finished the sentence for him. "And because of her traumatic delivery, any coroner who looked at her medical history would assume her heart simply gave out under the strain of childbearing."
"Precisely," Marcus said. "It’s a ghost crime. Virtually untraceable unless you know exactly what chemical signature you’re searching for."
I leaned back in my leather armchair, processing the magnitude of the betrayal. Evelyn wasn't just trying to make my wife look incompetent; she was slowly, systematically murdering her own child.
"Why?" I muttered, more to myself than to Marcus. "What does she gain from Isabella’s death?"
"We ran a background check on Evelyn’s finances, just as you requested," Marcus said, pulling a second, thinner folder from his jacket. "It turns out the 'wealthy, retired socialite' image she projects on social media is a complete fiction. Her late husband left her buried in millions of dollars of hidden gambling debts and unpaid back taxes. She’s facing foreclosure on her estate in South Carolina within sixty days."
The puzzle pieces snapped together with horrifying clarity.
"Isabella’s trust fund," I realized out loud. "Before Isabella married me, her father set up an unchangeable family trust worth twelve million dollars. If Isabella dies without leaving a signed, finalized adult legal will regarding the disbursement of those funds, the primary guardianship of the child—and the management of the trust until Luca reaches eighteen—reverts to Isabella’s next of kin."
"Her mother," Marcus added softly. "Evelyn becomes the sole conservator of twelve million dollars, plus whatever monthly childcare stipend she can squeeze out of your estate through family court custody battles."
A cold, vicious smile crept onto my face. It was never about maternal instinct. It was never about helping her daughter heal. It was a cold-blooded financial execution disguised as family devotion. She was poisoning her daughter to inherit her grandson and a multi-million-dollar fortune.
"Does Dr. Mercer have a neutralizing agent?" I asked, my voice deadly steady.
"Yes. He prepared a liquid counter-agent that is completely odorless and tasteless. It neutralizes the digitalis in the bloodstream without causing any side effects or sudden physical shifts that would tip Evelyn off. If we switch Isabella’s morning water with this agent, her body will clear the toxin within forty-eight hours."
"Good," I said, standing up and buttoning my coat. "Prepare the counter-agent. We start administering it secretly tonight. But we don't confront Evelyn yet."
Marcus looked at me, a hint of confusion in his experienced eyes. "Boss, respectfully... she’s trying to kill your wife. In our line of work, people disappear for far less than this."
"A bullet in a dark alley is too clean, too merciful for Evelyn Vance," I said, walking toward the door. "She loves her reputation. She lives for the applause of her social circles, her online followers, and high society. Ending her life quick gives her an easy exit. I am going to dismantle her world piece by piece until she is begging for the mercy of a prison cell."

"What’s the next move?"
"We let her proceed with her plan," I commanded. "We let her think she’s winning. And while she prepares her grand finale, we prepare her execution."
