Chapter 1 - Ten Seconds in the SpotlightThe tension in the ballroom was so sharp it felt as though it could slice through the heavy velvet drapes hanging along the windows.

Three hundred of Chicago’s most influential figures—judges, politicians, corporate executives, and society mavens—held their breath. The string quartet had completely dissolved into a silence so thick that the only sound remaining was the faint rustle of Paige Lang’s pearl-colored dress as she shrank back slightly into Connor Hayes’ side.
Harper looked up into Roman Falco’s dark, fathomless eyes. Up close, his presence was overwhelming. He didn't smell like the light, citrus colognes favored by the men of Chicago’s financial district; he smelled of rain, cedarwood, and the unmistakable, lingering edge of authority. The faint scar along his jawline gave his sharp face a rugged, dangerous edge that contrasted sharply with his impeccably tailored black suit.
"Do you trust me for ten seconds?" Roman’s deep baritone repeated, low enough that only Harper could hear the true resonance of his voice.
Harper didn't know Roman Falco. She knew his reputation—a formidable, enigmatic figure who walked the razor-thin line between legitimate commercial empire and the dark, unyielding underbelly of the city. She knew that lawyers at her firm spoke his name with a mixture of reverence and terror. But in this precise moment, looking at Connor’s smug, patronizing face, she knew one thing with absolute certainty: anything was better than letting Connor win.
"Ten seconds," Harper whispered back, her voice remarkably steady.
Roman didn't hesitate.
Before Connor could process the exchange, Roman leaned down. His left hand slid smoothly from the small of Harper’s back up to cradle the side of her neck, his broad thumb resting gently along her jawline. He pulled her in—not roughly, but with an absolute, magnetic certainty that left no room for doubt.
When his lips met hers, a collective, audible gasp echoed across the grand ballroom of the Halston Hotel.
The kiss wasn't a tentative, stage-managed peck designed for show. It was deep, intoxicating, and fiercely protective. Roman’s lips were warm and firm against hers, sending a sudden, electrifying surge of heat straight to Harper’s core. The world, the chandeliers, the melting swan sculpture, and the three hundred staring guests vanished into a blur. For six endless seconds, Harper forgot how to breathe. Her fingers automatically reached up, her manicured nails resting against the heavy lapel of his black suit jacket as she leaned into him.
When Roman slowly pulled back, his dark eyes remained locked onto hers for two full seconds, burning with a quiet intensity that made her pulse race wild. Then, with smooth, terrifying composure, he turned his head to look down at Connor.
Connor’s face had turned a mottled, sickly shade of grey. His jaw was slack, his hands trembling as he stared at the man whose hand was still resting possessively on Harper’s shoulder.
Paige’s artificial smile had completely vanished, replaced by an expression of sheer, horrified shock. Everyone in Chicago knew who Roman Falco was. More importantly, everyone knew what happened to men who crossed him.
"You..." Connor stammered, his polished, condescending voice completely stripped of its arrogance. "You're... with Harper?"
"I don't recall offering you a seat at our table, Mr. Hayes," Roman said, his voice dropping into a quiet, icy register that made the surrounding guests step back another foot. "Harper was gracious enough to grant you ten seconds of her time. Your ten seconds expired the moment you opened your mouth."
"Roman," Connor tried again, attempting to assume his corporate tone, though his voice cracked slightly. "There's been a misunderstanding. Harper and I—"
"Harper is the senior litigation counsel handling the acquisition of my riverfront logistics terminal," Roman interrupted smoothly, his thumb lazily tracing a slow circle on the back of Harper’s silk-clad shoulder. "And as of three minutes ago, she is also the only person in this room whose evening I care about. Which means your presence has officially become a nuisance."
Sarah Whitman, standing right behind Harper, looked like she was about to explode with pure, unadulterated triumph. She took a slow sip of her champagne, her eyes fixed on Paige, whose hand was now visibly shaking against Connor’s arm.
"We... we were just leaving for our dinner reservation," Paige squeaked out, her artificial bravery completely shattered.
"A wise decision," Roman said, not even looking at her. "The exit is behind you. Try not to embarrass yourselves further on the way out."
Connor opened his mouth to say something—anything to salvage his dignity in front of the city's elite—but one look at the cold, unyielding fire in Roman’s dark eyes silenced him completely. Without another word, Connor turned on his heel, grabbing Paige’s wrist and practically dragging her through the clearing crowd toward the grand oak doors of the ballroom.
As the doors slammed shut behind them, the murmurs in the room exploded like a sudden thunderstorm.
Harper stood frozen, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She looked at Roman, who had already stepped back, giving her space, his hands slipping casually into his trousers pockets.
"Are you alright, Counselor?" Roman asked quietly, the dangerous edge in his voice instantly softening as he looked down at her.

"I..." Harper swallowed hard, adjusting the strap of her emerald dress. "I think you just reshaped the social hierarchy of Chicago in ten seconds."
A faint, rare smile touched the corner of Roman Falco’s lips. "Good. It was long overdue."
