Chapter 3 - The Trap is SetOver the next four weeks, Harper’s life shifted into a high-octane blur of corporate strategy, intense legal maneuvering, and an increasingly electric personal connection with Roman Falco.

Every evening, after the firm’s doors were locked, Roman’s car would transport Harper to the Lincoln Park estate. Together, sitting over takeaway dinners in his grand library, they meticulously mapped out the legal trap for Connor Hayes and his mysterious informant inside Falco Holdings.

The line between professional alliance and genuine desire blurred more with every passing day.

Harper discovered that beneath Roman’s terrifying public persona was a man of intense loyalty, razor-sharp intellect, and a surprisingly dry, protective humor. He learned that she took her coffee black with half a spoon of raw sugar, that she worked out her stress by running along the lakefront at dawn, and that despite her fierce independence, she carried deep scars from Connor’s emotional manipulation.

One rainy Thursday night, as a thunderstorm battered the glass windows of the library, they were reviewing the dockland lease deeds spread across the coffee table. Harper leaned over to highlight a clause, her shoulder brushing against Roman’s arm.

Roman went completely still.

Harper stopped mid-sentence, looking up. They were inches apart. She could see the faint gold flecks in his dark brown eyes, could feel the heat radiating from his massive frame.

"Harper," Roman murmured, his voice dropping into a thick, rough gravel. "If you keep looking at me like that, I'm going to forget the rules we agreed on."

"Who said anything about rules?" Harper whispered, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs.

Roman didn't wait. He reached out, his long fingers tangling in the soft waves of her dark hair, pulling her face to his. The kiss was slow, deep, and filled with a desperate, pent-up passion that had been building between them for weeks. Harper let out a soft sigh against his mouth, her arms wrapping around his neck, pulling him down onto the velvet sofa.

Unlike Connor, who had always tried to control her, Roman held her as if she were the most precious, powerful force in his world. His hands were strong but intensely tender as they traced the curve of her waist, making her shiver with pure pleasure.

"You're safe with me, Harper," Roman breathed against her lips, his dark eyes searching hers as they finally broke apart for air. "Always."

The next morning, the trap was officially sprung.

Harper stood in the grand conference room of Hayes Capital on Michigan Avenue. Connor sat at the head of the long glass table, surrounded by his board of directors and Paige, who was sitting in the corner looking increasingly anxious.

"Miss Bennett," Connor said, attempting to project calm authority, though the dark circles under his eyes betrayed his sleepless nights. "I didn't expect a personal visit from the new senior partner of Davies Croft."

"I'm here to serve you with a formal cease-and-desist and an emergency subpoena, Connor," Harper said coldly, dropping a two-hundred-page legal filing onto the glass table with a loud thud.

Connor frowned, picking up the document. "Subpoena for what?"

"For illegal short-selling, corporate espionage, and federal wire fraud," Harper declared, her voice carrying across the silent boardroom with absolute authority. "We have traced the leak inside Falco Holdings directly to your personal offshore account in the Cayman Islands."

Connor’s face went chalk white. He slammed his hand on the table. "This is absurd! You're fabricating this to get revenge because I broke off our engagement!"

"I don't need revenge for an engagement, Connor," Harper said, leaning over the table, her hazel eyes locking onto his with terrifying precision. "I have the bank routing numbers, the encrypted text logs between you and Roman’s former head of security, and the deposition signed by your lead financial analyst forty-five minutes ago."

Paige gasped, jumping out of her chair. "Connor... you said everything was legal! You said Roman Falco couldn't touch us!"

"Shut up, Paige!" Connor snapped, his artificial composure completely shattering. He turned back to Harper, his breathing ragged. "You can't do this, Harper. You were my fiancée! You loved me!"

"I loved an illusion," Harper said, straightening her back, her posture radiant and unyielding. "And now, I am going to enjoy watching the state prosecutor tear your real life to pieces."
