Chapter 2 - THE MIDNIGHT EXTRACTAt 3:15 AM, the storm cellar doors at the far end of the basement began to groan.

The storm cellar had been rusted shut for a decade, ignored by Julian’s groundskeepers because it led out toward the overgrown forest at the edge of the five-acre estate. To Julian, it was just an ugly relic of the 1920s architecture.
To Evelyn, who had personally reviewed the property’s architectural blueprints before signing the deed eleven years ago, it was an escape route.
A hydraulic cutter hummed softly outside. Within three minutes, the heavy iron latch snapped with a clean, muffled clink. The heavy doors were lifted outward, letting in the sharp, freezing night air and the pale light of tactical flashlights.
Two men in unmarked black tactical gear lowered themselves down the stone steps.
"Mrs. Blackwood?" the lead man whispered, lifting his visor. His chest rig bore the small, discrete emblem of Vanguard Tactical. "Marcus Reed sent us. I’m Captain Miller."
"Captain," Evelyn said, her voice steady despite her condition. "My daughter first."
Miller didn't hesitate. He gently wrapped a thermal blanket around Penny, who blinked in confusion as she was lifted into the arms of the broad-shouldered operative. The second operative reached out to assist Evelyn, but she stood up on her own strength, suppressing a sharp gasp as her cracked ribs protested.
"Can you walk, ma'am?" Miller asked.
"I can walk," Evelyn said, her eyes fixed on the house rising in the distance.
They moved quietly through the deep brush at the perimeter of the property, entirely bypassing the estate’s main security gates where Julian’s private guards were currently sipping coffee, blissfully unaware of what was transpiring in the woods.
A sleek, black armored SUV waited on the gravel access road half a mile away, its engine idling silently.
As Captain Miller opened the rear door for Evelyn, she turned back to look at the Blackwood mansion. The grand stone structure looked like a castle against the dark night sky, illuminated by soft landscape lighting.
Inside that castle, her husband was sleeping, confident in his absolute dominance over her life.
"Mrs. Blackwood," Miller said softly. "We need to go. The medical team is waiting at the private airfield."
"Call me Evelyn," she said, stepping into the vehicle. "Evelyn Hart."
By 6:00 AM, the SUV had arrived at a private hangar at Logan International Airport in Boston.
Inside the hangar’s private executive suite, a top-tier forensic medical team was already set up. Dr. Sarah Vance, a renowned medical examiner retained by Hart Meridian, personally conducted the physical evaluation while a female assistant gently treated Penny’s bruised wrists in the adjoining room.
"Four cracked ribs, severe soft-tissue trauma across the shoulder blades, a fractured zygomatic arch, and a deep laceration on the upper lip," Dr. Vance read off her digital tablet, her face pale with cold fury. "The bruising on the child’s wrists matches high-pressure compression marks from tactical gloves."
Standing near the window was Marcus Reed.
At fifty-four, Marcus looked like a senior diplomatic envoy—impeccably tailored in a dark gray suit, his silver hair neatly slicked back. But behind his refined appearance was a man who had helped Evelyn dismantle hostile corporate takeovers worth billions.
He walked over to the examination table, looking down at the high-resolution forensic photographs of Evelyn’s injuries.
"He’s a dead man, Evie," Marcus said softly.
"No," Evelyn corrected, holding a ice pack against her swollen cheek. "Dead men don't suffer. Dead men don't have to watch their legacy turn into ash."
"The FBI has already opened a file," Marcus said, tapping his tablet screen. "We’ve submitted the cloud server video footage from the wine room. Special Agent Raymond Vance—no relation to the doctor here—is handling it personally. He’s already requested an emergency federal warrant for Julian’s arrest."
"Hold the warrant," Evelyn commanded.
Marcus blinked, surprised. "Hold it? Evie, he put you in a basement. He beat you."
"If they arrest him now, his legal team will post bail within two hours," Evelyn explained, her eyes cold and clear. "His PR firm will spin it as a domestic dispute, a 'he-said-she-said' argument between a stressed CEO and an hysterical wife. They will freeze his assets temporarily, and he’ll use Blackwood Capital’s institutional funds to fight a drawn-out legal war while hiding behind his connections."
She sat up straight, ignoring the sharp pain in her chest.
"I don't want him arrested in his pajamas, Marcus. I want him arrested on the trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange during the opening bell of Blackwood Capital’s annual investor conference."

Marcus’s lips slowly curled into a razor-thin smile. "The investor conference is tomorrow morning at eight o'clock."
"Precisely," Evelyn said. "He spent eleven years believing I was just his trophy wife. Tomorrow, I’m going to show him who really built his table."
