Chapter 5 - THE DISMANTLINGThree months later.

The bankruptcy court for the Southern District of New York was packed to capacity.
Julian Blackwood sat at the defense table, wearing a faded orange jumpsuit. He had lost twenty pounds. His hair was messy, his posture slumped, his eyes hollow and defeated.
Beside him, Arthur Pendelton sat with a thick stack of liquidation filings.
Across the courtroom sat Evelyn, flanked by Marcus Reed and her legal team. She wore a simple charcoal coat and trousers, her face radiant, calm, and completely healed.
Judge Thomas Sterling adjusted his reading glasses, scanning the final asset distribution decree.
"In the matter of Hart Meridian v. Blackwood Capital, et al.," Judge Sterling announced, his voice echoing in the quiet courtroom. "The court finds that the defendant, Julian Blackwood, engaged in systematic corporate fraud, grand larceny, and severe domestic felony offenses."
The judge tapped his gavel against the wooden block.
"Under the corporate liquidation order, all assets of Blackwood Capital, including its proprietary trading technology, corporate accounts, and commercial real estate holdings, are hereby transferred to Hart Meridian Global Holdings to satisfy outstanding creditor claims."
Judge Sterling turned his attention to the personal property decree.
"Furthermore, regarding the personal estate located at 144 Blackwood Lane, along with all associated personal vehicles, luxury items, and offshore holdings registered under Vale Investments—these assets are hereby seized and awarded to Mrs. Evelyn Hart as restitution for severe domestic abuse, child endangerment, and marital fraud."
Julian lifted his head slowly, his voice raspy as he spoke to his attorney. "Arthur... what about my family trust? My father’s inheritance?"
Arthur didn't look at him. "It’s gone, Julian. The federal government seized it to pay the $42 million SEC penalty. You are completely insolvent."
"And the criminal sentencing?" Julian choked out.
"Fifteen years at the federal correctional facility in Fort Dix," Arthur whispered. "Vanessa accepted a plea deal thirty minutes ago. She’s serving four years in state prison for her role in the wire fraud."
Julian closed his eyes as a heavy, suffocating darkness enveloped him.
He had spent his whole life building a fortress of wealth, status, and control, believing that his power made him untouchable.
Now, he had nothing. No money. No company. No reputation. No freedom.
As the court marshals stood up to escort Julian back to the holding cell, he turned his head to look at Evelyn one last time.
She stood up slowly, picking up her leather briefcase.
She walked past the defense table, stopping for a brief second to look at the man she had loved for eleven years.
"Evelyn..." Julian whispered, tears welling in his red-rimmed eyes. "Please... just let me see Penny... once before I’m transferred..."
Evelyn looked down at him with quiet, unshakeable dignity.

"My daughter’s name is Penny Hart," Evelyn said, her voice clear and absolute. "She doesn't have a father anymore. She has a mother who will never let anyone hurt her again."
Without waiting for his response, she turned and walked out of the courtroom, her heels clicking rhythmically against the polished marble floor.
