Chapter 4 - THE BOARDROOM EXECUTIONThe New York Stock Exchange was buzzing with energy at 7:30 AM the following morning.

Inside the grand glass-walled conference room overlooking the main trading floor, three hundred of Blackwood Capital’s most elite institutional investors, board members, and financial journalists had gathered for the firm’s annual capital allocation summit.

Julian Blackwood stood in the backstage holding area, sweating profusely despite the freezing air conditioning.

He had spent the last twenty-four hours trying to reach Evelyn. He had called her phone a hundred times. He had sent frantic texts, offering everything—the house, the custody of Penny, his personal accounts—if she would just stop the legal proceedings.

Every single call went straight to voicemail.

Beside him, Vanessa was wringing her hands, her face caked in heavy makeup. "Julian, what are we going to do? The reporters outside are asking questions about Vale Investments! My bank account was frozen an hour ago!"

"Shut up, Vanessa!" Julian hissed, his nerves completely shattered. "Just shut up and let me handle this! I’m going to go out there, make the presentation, and assure the board that our liquidity is fine. Once the market opens, I’ll deal with Marcus Reed."

"Mr. Blackwood," the stage manager announced. "Two minutes to live broadcast."

Julian smoothed his Italian wool suit, swallowed hard, and stepped out onto the stage.

The spotlight hit him, blinding him for a brief second. Polite, scattered applause broke out among the audience, though the atmosphere in the room was distinctly cold. News of Hart Meridian’s sudden debt conversion had already leaked to The Wall Street Journal thirty minutes earlier.

Julian walked up to the podium, placing his hands on the edges to steady his shaking fingers.

"Good morning, ladies and gentlemen," Julian began, forcing a confident, million-dollar smile onto his face. "Welcome to the annual investor showcase. Today, I am proud to share with you the extraordinary growth of Blackwood Capital..."

Before he could finish the sentence, the massive projection screen behind him flickered.

The slide showing the firm’s projected returns vanished.

In its place appeared a live video feed.

The room went dead silent.

On the screen was a sleek, sunlit corporate office overlooking Manhattan. Sitting behind a desk made of dark walnut wood was Evelyn.

She was dressed in an exquisite, tailored ivory suit. Her dark hair was styled in an effortless, commanding bob. Though a faint trace of makeup concealed her injuries, her eyes were cold, piercing, and completely devoid of fear.

Beside her sat Marcus Reed, along with Special Agent Raymond Vance of the FBI.

Julian froze at the podium, his voice dying in his throat. "What... what is this?"

Evelyn looked directly into the camera lens, her voice projecting clearly through every speaker in the grand conference room.

"Good morning, investors of Blackwood Capital," Evelyn said, her voice smooth, precise, and echoing with absolute authority. "I am Evelyn Hart, Founder and Managing Director of Hart Meridian Global Holdings."

A loud, collective gasp echoed through the audience.

Financial journalists in the front row immediately began typing frantically on their laptops.

"For the past eleven years," Evelyn continued, "you have trusted Julian Blackwood with your capital, believing him to be the mastermind behind this firm's proprietary trading algorithms. What you were never told is that those algorithms were authored by me in 2014, under a master licensing agreement held exclusively by Hart Meridian."

Julian’s face went from pale to ghostly white. "Evelyn! Stop this! Cut the feed! Cut the damn feed!" he screamed toward the tech booth.

The tech crew didn't move. They were employees of the venue—a venue owned by a real estate trust controlled by Hart Meridian.

"Effective as of 8:00 AM today," Evelyn proceeded calmly, completely ignoring Julian’s outburst, "Hart Meridian has terminated Blackwood Capital’s software license due to gross breach of fiduciary duty, corporate embezzlement, and criminal misconduct by its Chief Executive Officer."

She clicked a button on her desk.

The screen split into two panels.

On the left side was a detailed forensic breakdown of the $18 million Julian had diverted into Vale Investments, complete with bank routing numbers, wire transfers, and Vanessa Vale’s signature.

On the right side was the high-definition surveillance video from the estate’s wine room two nights ago.

The entire conference room gasped in horror as the video played on the thirty-foot screen.

The image of Julian striking Evelyn.

The image of his security guards grabbing seven-year-old Penny.

The audio of Vanessa laughing while the basement door was locked.

Pandemonium broke out on the floor.

Investors leapt from their seats, shouting in outrage. Board members stood up, surrounding the stage. Photographers began flashing cameras rapidly, capturing Julian’s terrified, ruinous expression as he backed away from the podium like a trapped animal.

"Julian Blackwood," Special Agent Vance’s voice boomed through the speakers. "Federal agents are entering the auditorium now. Do not attempt to leave the stage."

The heavy double doors at the back of the conference room burst open.

A dozen federal agents in windbreakers, accompanied by NYPD officers, marched down the central aisle toward the stage.

Julian turned to run toward the backstage exit, but Captain Miller and three Vanguard Tactical officers were already standing there, blocking his path.

"Julian!" Vanessa shrieked from the side of the stage as an NYPD officer clamped handcuffs onto her wrists. "Julian, do something! You promised me!"

Julian didn't look at her.

He fell to his knees on the wooden stage floor as two federal agents pulled his arms behind his back, clicking the cold steel cuffs over his wrists.

He looked up at the massive screen one last time.

Evelyn was looking down at him through the camera lens. Her face didn't show anger. It didn't show triumph. It showed only the serene, mathematical clarity of a problem that had been solved perfectly.

"The calculation is complete, Julian," she said softly, before the feed went black.
