Chapter 3 - The Spider’s Web

The mention of Vitalis Health sent a chilling current through the master suite.

"Michael Carter," Richard mused, sitting up on the edge of his bed as Maya monitored his heart rate. "Your ex-husband works for Vitalis?"

"He's the Senior Vice President of Supply Logistics," Maya said, her fingers tightening around her clipboard. "He managed high-value pharmaceutical distribution. Four years ago, Vitalis secured an exclusive contract with private clinics across the Midwest. Michael used to brag about securing 'untraceable specialty compounds' for high-paying private clients."

Richard’s face hardened into a mask of pure steel. "So Ethan didn't just go to a back-alley hitman. He bought the poison through a legitimate biomedical supply chain, using your ex-husband’s department to wipe the records."

"Michael wouldn't care who the compound was for, as long as the commission check cleared," Maya said, her voice dripping with venom. "He was so desperate to impress his mother and fund his affair with Valerie that he would have sold poison to anyone."

Richard looked at her, seeing not just a skilled caregiver, but an ally whose personal score aligned perfectly with his own. He reached out and placed his large, warm hand over hers.

"Then we strike two targets with one blow," Richard said softly. "Michael Carter thinks he discarded you like trash. Ethan thinks he has buried me in this chair. Next Thursday, Ethan is hosting a charity gala here at the estate. He invited the board of directors from Vitalis Health to finalize a major investment deal—a front to launder the stolen Vance funds into legitimate stock."

"Michael will be here?" Maya asked, her breath catching.

"Michael, his mother, and his new mistress will all be here," Richard revealed, a dark, satisfying promise in his tone. "Ethan wants to show off his new kingdom to his corporate partners. But instead of an execution, they are going to witness an insurrection."

Over the next six days, the mansion became a pressure cooker. Maya continued the daily syringe swaps, hoarding vials of the neurotoxin in a hidden wall safe behind a painting in Richard’s study. Every night after midnight, while the rest of the house slept, Richard trained.

Maya watched in awe as the mafia boss transformed. He worked through intense physical therapy, regaining his explosive strength, running through silent combat drills in the soundproof private gym hidden behind his closet. But as the nights bled into one another, their relationship evolved into something far deeper than a alliance of convenience.

Late one Tuesday night, after a grueling two-hour conditioning session, Richard sat on the edge of the mat, wiping sweat from his neck with a towel. Maya handed him a bottle of water, sitting down on the bench beside him.

"You don't talk about your marriage," Richard noted gently, looking at her profile in the dim gym lights.

Maya stared at the floor, a faint, sad smile touching her lips. "There isn't much to say. I spent twelve years trying to be the perfect wife. I thought if I worked hard enough, cooked good enough meals, kept the house spotless, and endured his mother’s endless insults, Michael would love me. But when I couldn't give him a child, and when my father got sick... I became invisible to him. Just a piece of furniture that kept the house running."

Richard set his water bottle down, shifted closer, and reached out, gently lifting her chin so she had to look into his dark, intense eyes.

"Then your ex-husband is the stupidest man in Illinois," Richard said, his voice thick with unrefined sincerity. "He had a woman with the courage of a lion, the loyalty of a soldier, and a heart that didn't break even when the world tried to crush it. He didn't deserve you, Maya. Neither did his mother."

Maya’s breath caught in her throat. For twelve years, Michael had made her feel small, plain, and replaceable. But sitting here in the dark with one of the most feared men in Chicago, she felt seen—really seen—for the first time in her life.

"And you?" Maya whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Who takes care of you, Richard?"

"Nobody," Richard murmured, his gaze dropping to her lips before rising back to her eyes. "Until you walked through that door."

The air between them burned with an unmistakable spark. Richard leaned in slowly, giving her every chance to pull away, but Maya didn't move. When his lips met hers, it wasn't a gentle, polite kiss—it was deep, fierce, and filled with a raw, protective hunger that sent a wave of heat crashing through her entire body.

When they finally broke apart, both panted softly. Richard stroked her cheek gently with his thumb.

"Tomorrow night, the trap snaps shut," Richard whispered. "Stay close to me, Maya. When the storm hits, I won't let anyone touch you."

"I'm not running, Richard," Maya said, her eyes blazing with absolute conviction. "I'm going to stand right beside you."
