Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

Gasp of horror and disbelief erupted across the ballroom. Guests shrank back in terror. Chloe dropped her champagne glass; it shattered on the marble floor with a loud crash. Ethan froze, his eyes wide with unadulterated panic, his jaw trembling as if he had just seen a ghost walk out of a grave.
Richard stood at his full, imposing height. He stretched his neck, adjusted the cuffs of his dark tuxedo, and looked down at his younger brother with eyes that promised death.
"You always were impatient, Ethan," Richard’s voice roared across the silent room, rich, powerful, and completely devoid of weakness. "You couldn't even wait for the poison to finish the job."
"R-Richard..." Ethan stammered, backing away, his hands shaking violently. "You... you're paralyzed... the doctors said..."
"The doctors you bribed said what you paid them to say!" Richard barked. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a thick ledger, tossing it onto the central table before the gathered elites. "Inside that file are six months of bank transfers from Ethan Vance and Chloe Vance to Dr. Haze, purchasing illegally synthesized neurotoxins directly from Vitalis Health!"
The room descended into utter chaos. Federal agents in tactical gear—whom Richard had quietly alerted three hours before the event—shattered the glass doors of the patio and flooded the ballroom, weapons drawn.
"FBI! Nobody move! Put your hands on your heads!"
Michael Carter panicked. He turned to run toward the rear exits, abandoning Valerie and his mother without a second thought. But Maya stepped directly into his path.
Michael glared at her, desperation making him wild. "Get out of my way, Maya, or I swear to God I'll—"
Michael swung a desperate fist at her face. But Maya, drawing on years of physical stamina and sharp reflexes, dodged smoothly to the left, grabbed Michael’s extended wrist, locked his arm, and drove her elbow sharply into his solar plexus.
Michael collapsed to his knees, gasping for air, clutching his stomach as Maya easily twisted his arm behind his back and pinned him to the floor.
"You forgot one thing, Michael," Maya whispered into his ear as federal agents rushed forward to slap handcuffs on his wrists. "My father taught me how to handle dead weight."
Diane screamed in horror as federal agents grabbed Michael by his shoulders and dragged him to his feet. "Michael! My boy! What are you doing?! Arrest her! She hit my son!"
An FBI agent grabbed Diane by the arm as well. "Diane Carter, you are being brought in for questioning as an accessory to corporate embezzlement and illegal pharmaceutical distribution!"
"What?!" Diane shrieked, her expensive wig slipping slightly, her face red with humiliation asguests filmed her on their phones. "I'm an innocent woman! Maya! Tell them! Tell them who I am!"
Maya walked slowly toward Diane, stopping just inches from her trembling face. She looked down at the woman who had tormented her for twelve years, who had blamed her for her husband's betrayal, who had laughed as she walked out with two suitcases.
"I know exactly who you are, Diane," Maya said, her voice icy, serene, and completely devoid of pity. "You're a woman who built her entire life on a lie. And now, you get to watch your son wear an orange jumpsuit for the next twenty years."
Diane burst into hysterical tears as agents led her, Michael, and a weeping Valerie out of the mansion in full view of Chicago’s high society.
On the other side of the room, Ethan and Chloe were being slammed against the marble wall by tactical officers. Ethan looked over his shoulder at his brother, his face twisted in bitter defeat.
"How?" Ethan choked out. "How did you flush out the medication? Who helped you?!"

Richard walked over to Maya, sliding his arm around her waist and pulling her firmly against his side. He looked down at his disgraced brother with absolute contempt.
"You hired the wrong caregiver, Ethan," Richard said softly. "You thought she was weak because she was gentle. But she’s the strongest thing that ever walked into this house."
