Chapter 4 - The Gala of Ghosts

The Vance mansion was illuminated like a palace of light. Valets in crisp black uniforms parked millions of dollars worth of luxury sports cars along the winding driveway. Inside the grand ballroom, live chamber music echoed beneath the soaring ceilings as two hundred of Chicago’s most influential figures—politicians, underworld bosses, corporate executives, and corrupt judges—mingled over caviar and vintage champagne.
Maya walked through the grand hallway wearing a sleek, dark navy evening gown that Richard had quietly delivered to her quarters that morning. It was elegant, modest, yet perfectly tailored to showcase her graceful posture and striking features. She moved with effortless composure, pushing Richard’s motorized wheelchair into the center of the ballroom.
Richard sat in his customary slumped position, his face blank, playing the quiet prop for his brother’s grand coming-out party.
Ethan stood near the stage, surrounded by executives from Vitalis Health. Among them was Michael Carter, dressed in a tuxedo that looked slightly too tight around the collar, holding a glass of champagne. Beside Michael was Valerie, wearing a backless red dress, her arm linked possessively through his. And sitting on a plush velvet sofa nearby, holding court like an emperor’s mother, was Diane Carter, sipping champagne and beaming with unearned pride.
"Ah, the guest of honor!" Ethan announced loudly into a microphone, gathering the room’s attention. "My dear brother, Richard. Though he can no longer speak or lead us, his spirit remains the foundation of the Vance family!"
A polite round of applause filled the room. Chloe stood beside Ethan, smirking victoriously as she raised her glass.
Michael turned toward the wheelchair, his eyes scanning Maya’s face. Suddenly, his expression froze. He nearly dropped his champagne glass.
"Maya?" Michael gasped, stepping forward, his face turning pale. "What... what are you doing here?!"
Diane immediately stood up from the sofa, her face twisting into an expression of pure disgust as she marched over. "What is this nonsense? Maya! Are you catering this event? I told you she’d end up serving drinks in places like this, Michael!"
Maya stood tall beside Richard’s chair, her chin held high, her eyes cold as polished steel. She didn't flinch. She didn't look down.
"I don't serve drinks, Diane," Maya said, her voice carrying clearly across the surrounding circle of guests. "I am Mr. Richard Vance’s private medical director."
Valerie chuckled maliciously, clutching Michael’s arm tighter. "Medical director? Michael, you said she was just a glorified housekeeper who looked after her dying father. She’s a glorified diaper-changer for an old mafia boss who can't even wipe his own chin!"
Laughter flickered through Ethan and Chloe’s immediate circle.
Michael sneered, trying to regain his dominant posture in front of his corporate peers. "Maya, you're embarrassing yourself. You walk out on our marriage with two suitcases, and three days later you're begging for crumbs in a mansion like this? You should have listened to my mother. You're nothing without me."
"Is that so, Michael?" Maya asked, a calm, lethal smile gracing her lips. "And what are you without Vitalis Health’s illegal pharmaceutical shipments?"
Michael’s face drained of all color instantly. "What... what did you just say?"
Ethan’s eyes narrowed into slits. He stepped down from the stage, his hand moving toward his jacket pocket. "Security. Remove this woman immediately. She’s clearly mentally unstable."
Two heavy-set security guards in black suits stepped forward, reaching for Maya’s arms.
Before their hands could make contact with her dress, a sound echoed through the ballroom that stopped every heart in the room.

It was the sound of a motorized wheelchair being switched off.
Then, slowly, smoothly, and with absolute, terrifying grace, Richard Vance stood up.
