Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the ShadowsThe nursery felt as though the temperature had plummeted thirty degrees.

Julian stared at Clara, his mind spinning into a vortex of confusion, grief, and denial. He looked at her features—the delicate slope of her nose, the distinct shape of her jaw, the dark brown eyes. She didn't just resemble Eleanor; she was Eleanor’s living mirror image, aged slightly by years of hardship and fear.
"You're lying," Julian choked out, pulling his phone from his pocket. "This is a scam. You’re an impostor trying to lay claim to the Vance trust fund—"
"Ask me about the night on the pier in Maine," Clara said quietly, looking straight into his eyes.
Julian’s hand froze over his phone screen.
"Ask me what Eleanor told you under the lighthouse three days before your wedding," Clara continued, her tears flowing freely. "She told you that she was terrified of her family's wealth. She told you that the silver ring around her neck belonged to our grandmother, and that she gave the matching one to her twin sister before we were separated. She told you that if she ever had a son, she would name him Leo after our grandfather."
Clara reached under her scratchy maid uniform and pulled out the thin gold chain he had noticed earlier. She unclasped it and handed the small silver ring to Julian.
Julian took the ring with trembling fingers. Inside the inner band, microscopic engravings read: E & C - Forever Linked.
It was the exact twin to the ring currently sitting in Eleanor’s jewelry box in the master bedroom.
Julian fell to his knees beside the rocking chair, his hands covering his face as a ragged, soundless sob tore through his chest. Ten years of believed history collapsed around him in seconds.
"Clara..." Julian breathed, looking up at her with raw, bloodshot eyes. "My God... you’re alive."
"I’ve been hiding in plain sight for ten years," Clara whispered, laying a gentle hand on his shoulder. "Richard Vance discovered that our father left a secret clause in the family trust. If both Eleanor and I were dead or legally incapacitated, the entire $80 million fortune would revert to the trust management firm—which is owned entirely by Richard."
"He told Eleanor you drowned..." Julian said, pieces of a dark puzzle finally fitting together.
"He paid off a boat captain to destroy my sailboat in Switzerland," Clara revealed, her voice filled with quiet horror. "I barely survived. When I woke up in a French hospital weeks later, Richard’s men were waiting for me. They threatened to kill Eleanor if I ever returned to America or contacted her. They gave me a fake passport, forced me into obscurity, and kept me under constant surveillance in Europe."
"Then why did you come back?" Julian asked.
"Because six months ago, I got a message from Eleanor," Clara said, her eyes burning with fierce devotion. "A week before she gave birth, she realized Richard was tampering with her medication. She suspected he was trying to induce fatal complications during labor so he could gain control of the estate through Leo's guardianship. She managed to smuggle a letter to my old contact in Paris. She knew she wasn't going to survive the birth, Julian. She begged me to come home and protect her baby."
Julian stood up slowly, the blood draining from his face, replaced by a cold, terrifying fury that washed away six months of depression and fatigue.
"He killed her," Julian said, his voice dropping into an icy register. "The doctors said it was an unexpected amniotic fluid embolism... but Richard was the one who recommended that private clinic in upstate New York. He controlled her entire medical team."
"He thought I was still in Europe," Clara said. "I spent five months acquiring false papers, working low-level domestic jobs, waiting for an opportunity to get inside this house. I had to see my sister's child. I had to protect him."
She looked down at Leo, who opened his tiny dark eyes, let out a soft sigh of absolute contentment, and reached his tiny hand up to touch Clara’s cheek.
"He knows my voice," Clara smiled through her tears. "I used to sing that French song into Eleanor’s belly through a video call when she was alone in the hospital. He remembers."
Suddenly, a loud, sharp knock echoed against the nursery door.
The handle jiggled violently.
"Julian!" Evelyn’s voice boomed from the hallway. "Open this door right now! Richard has called his security team. They found a tracking hit on that maid’s legal background—she’s using a forged identity!"
Clara’s eyes widened in terror. She stood up from the chair, holding Leo tightly against her chest.

Julian stepped between Clara and the door, his jaw set like granite.
"Stay behind me, Clara," Julian commanded, his eyes blazing with a lethal determination. "Nobody touches you or my son ever again."
