Chapter 4 - The Net ClosesJulian unlocked the door and swung it open.

Standing in the hallway was Richard Vance, holding a sleek black smartphone, flanked by two burly men in tactical suits. Evelyn stood behind them, looking flustered and angry.

"Julian, step aside," Richard commanded, his voice devoid of all former legal pleasantries. "That woman is an international fugitive operating under a stolen identity. My private security team is taking her into custody until the state police arrive."

Julian didn't step aside. He leaned against the doorframe, his tall frame blocking the entrance entirely.

"Her name isn't Elena, Richard," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Her name is Clara Vance."

The hallway went completely silent.

Evelyn gasped, clutching her pearls, her face draining of color. "Clara?! That’s... that’s impossible! Clara died a decade ago!"

Richard Vance’s eyes narrowed into dark, vicious slits. The mask of the refined family attorney slipped completely, revealing the cold, calculating predator underneath.

"I don't know what fairy tales this girl has been spinning in there, Julian," Richard sneered, reaching into his coat pocket. "Clara Vance is dead. This woman is a professional con artist attempting to execute an identity fraud scheme on Eleanor's trust."

"Is that why you paid off a clinic in Geneva ten years ago, Richard?" Julian countered, taking a slow step forward into the hallway. "Is that why you forged Eleanor's signature on the trust update two days before she died?"

Richard didn't answer with words. He pulled a small, silver remote control from his pocket and pressed a button.

Instantly, the mansion’s primary power was cut. The bright hallway lights vanished, plunging the entire second floor into darkness, illuminated only by the faint red glow of the emergency exit signs.

"Take the child and secure the woman," Richard ordered his tactical guards in a low, ruthless tone. "Julian is suffering from severe psychiatric distress. Lock him in the study."

"Touch my son and you die in this hallway," Julian growled.

Before the two guards could move, Julian lunged forward.

Years of varsity rugby and high-intensity training came back to him instantly. He slammed his broad shoulder into the first guard, throwing the man heavily against the oak wall paneling. The second guard reached for a stun weapon, but Julian caught his wrist, twisting it violently until the weapon clattered to the floor.

"Clara! Run!" Julian yelled over the sound of struggling bodies. "Take the rear servants' stairs to the garage!"

Inside the nursery, Clara didn't hesitate. She wrapped Leo securely in his thickest fleece blanket, pulled him tight to her chest, and darted through the nursery’s side door—a hidden door that connected directly to the old servants' passage built into the estate’s historic architecture.

"Evelyn!" Richard roared in the dark hallway, shoving Julian’s mother out of his way as he pulled a small firearm from his holster. "Find that girl! If she leaves this property with the child, we lose everything!"

Evelyn, finally realizing the horrifying scope of the monster she had partnered with for years, stumbled backward in terror. "Richard... what are you doing?! You said we were just securing the trust!"

"Shut up, you foolish woman!" Richard hissed, sprinting down the corridor after Clara.

Meanwhile, Julian managed to knock the second guard unconscious with a heavy blow to the jaw. Breathing heavily, blood dripping from a cut on his lip, he grabbed the dropped stun weapon from the floor and sprinted into the dark servants' passage after Richard Vance.

The chase echoed through the hollow walls of the mansion.

Clara ran down the narrow, spiral iron stairs, her heart hammering like a drum. Leo was quiet in her arms, sensing the danger, his wide dark eyes looking up at his aunt.

When she reached the ground floor garage bay, she threw open the heavy metal door. The garage held four luxury vehicles, including Julian’s armored SUV.

She reached for the driver's door of the SUV, but a loud CLICK sounded behind her.

"End of the line, Clara," Richard Vance’s voice echoed off the concrete walls of the garage.

Clara turned slowly.

Richard stood twenty feet away, his gun raised, aiming directly at Clara’s chest. His face was twisted into a grotesque, desperate sneer under the dim garage emergency lights.

"Ten years ago, you should have stayed in Switzerland," Richard said softly. "You and your sister were always so inconvenient. All that money, wasting away on charity and soft-hearted nonsense, when it belonged in hands that knew how to use real power."

"You killed Eleanor," Clara said, her voice dropping all fear, replaced by an immovable, righteous strength as she shielded Leo with her body. "She trusted you."

"Eleanor was weak," Richard sneered, taking a step closer, his finger tightening on the trigger. "And so are you. Give me the boy, Clara. Or I’ll end this ten-year mistake right here."

"Drop the gun, Richard!"

A loud shout echoed from the garage entrance.

Julian stepped out of the shadow of the doorway, his stun weapon raised, pointing it directly at the attorney's head.
