Chapter 2 - The Awakening of Arthur Vance

Arthur Vance sat behind the massive mahogany desk in his Dallas penthouse study, a single desk lamp illuminating the sharp, weathered lines of his face. At seventy-two, he possessed the unyielding presence of a man who had survived corporate warfare, economic recessions, and personal tragedies without ever blinking.
When his phone buzzed at midnight with Claire’s voice—shattered, bleeding, and reporting physical abuse at the hands of the man Arthur had personally approved—the grandfatherly warmth vanished completely. In its place stood the titan of industry.
Within twenty minutes of hanging up, Arthur had convened an emergency virtual conference call with his inner circle: his chief legal counsel, the head of his private intelligence firm, and the senior vice presidents of the Vance Holdings board.
"I want every financial tie, every shadow asset, and every corporate lever we control regarding Grant Whitmore pulled immediately," Arthur instructed, his voice a low, terrifying rumble that carried across the encrypted speakers. "He used my daughter’s home as a staging ground for his arrogance. I want his credit lines severed, his corporate shares frozen under emergency breach-of-conduct clauses, and a forensic audit of Apex Logistics’ regional accounts dropped on my desk by sunrise."
"Sir," his general counsel replied cautiously, "freezing his personal assets on a preliminary basis will trigger a legal defense, and Apex’s board will demand justification—"

"Justification?" Arthur cut him off, his eyes flashing with controlled fury. "Grant Whitmore is an executive vice president sitting on an equity vesting schedule that depends entirely on his standing within my family's umbrella portfolio. He violated the morality clause of his employment contract the moment he brought an Apex corporate liability into my daughter’s residence. Crush him legally, financially, and completely. Leave him nothing."
By 3:00 AM, the machinery was in motion. High-level financial algorithms automatically executed asset freezes across three major banking institutions. Legal injunctions were drafted, sealed, and prepared for morning delivery. Arthur stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the sleeping city, his jaw locked. He had given Grant everything—a career, a platform, a family. Now, he would watch him burn.
