Chapter 5 - The Reckoning at the Mansion

By late afternoon, Grant drove his leased luxury sedan back to the Highland Park mansion, his mind spinning out of control. He had been fired, his bank accounts were frozen, criminal charges were looming, and his entire professional reputation lay in absolute ruins.

When he unlocked the front door, expecting sanctuary, he found the foyer entirely empty.

"Vanessa?" he shouted frantically, dropping his briefcase on the floor.

A door upstairs clicked open, and Vanessa walked out down the hallway, wearing designer clothes she had purchased with his now-frozen credit cards, carrying two large leather suitcases.

"What are you doing?" Grant demanded, rushing up the stairs. "Where are you going?"

Vanessa glared at him with pure disgust, her previous playful demeanor completely gone. "Are you out of your mind, Grant? I just tried to use your platinum card to book a flight out of state, and it was declined. The bank told me your accounts are frozen and you’ve been fired from Apex!"

"It's a temporary glitch!" Grant lied desperately, grabbing her arm. "My father-in-law is playing games, but I’ll sort it out—"

"Get your hands off me!" Vanessa shrieked, jerking her arm away. "I didn't sign up to play house with a broke, disgraced nobody who is about to go to prison! It’s over, Grant. Don't ever call me again."

She brushed past him, marched down the stairs, slammed the front door, and sped away in her own car, leaving him standing alone in the echoing, silent hallway.

The irony hit him with the force of a physical blow. Exactly twenty-four hours earlier, he had stood in that exact spot, throwing Claire’s overnight bag into the rain while feeling like a conqueror. Now, karma had returned to collect its debt with devastating interest.

His phone buzzed in his pocket. It was an incoming call from an unknown number.

With trembling fingers, Grant answered. "Hello?"

"Mr. Whitmore," a calm, professional voice stated. "This is the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department. We have an active warrant for your arrest regarding corporate fraud and asset embezzlement. Officers are currently arriving at your residence. Please open the front door immediately."

Grant dropped his phone. It clattered against the hardwood floor, the screen cracking into spiderwebs as heavy pounding echoed against the front door downstairs.
