Chapter 4 - The Apex Boardroom

The boardroom on the forty-fifth floor of Apex Logistics was freezing cold, despite the morning heat outside.

When Grant pushed open the heavy glass doors, all twelve members of the board of directors were seated around the long mahogany table. At the far head of the table, sitting quietly in a leather armchair that belonged to no ordinary board member, was Arthur Vance. He hadn't sat in that room in five years.

Grant forced a tight, nervous smile, attempting to project the swagger of a man who believed he could talk his way out of anything. "Arthur. Good morning. I’m not sure what kind of misunderstanding has occurred regarding my personal finances, but—"

"Sit down, Grant," Arthur interrupted softly. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't have to. The sheer weight of his presence commanded absolute silence.

Grant swallowed hard, taking a seat at the opposite end of the table. "Look, whatever Claire told you, it’s exaggerated. Marital disputes happen. We were growing apart, and—"

"You raised your hand against my daughter in her own home," Arthur said, his eyes locking onto Grant’s with the cold intensity of a predator. "You brought a mistress into a house purchased with Vance capital, dressed her in my daughter’s clothes, and threw Claire out into a freezing storm like trash."

The board members shifted uncomfortably in their seats. Several looked down at their folders, unwilling to meet Grant’s panicked gaze.

"That is a private family matter!" Grant stammered, standing up. "It has nothing to do with Apex Logistics!"

"Everything you have, Grant, is Apex Logistics," the lead corporate attorney stated, sliding a thick document across the table. "And Apex Logistics is entirely owned and backed by Vance Holdings. Furthermore, our forensic audit uncovered that over the past fourteen months, you systematically diverted corporate entertainment budgets and travel allowances to fund high-end retail purchases, luxury hotel stays, and jewelry for Ms. Vanessa Cole."

Grant went completely pale. The documents displayed clear, undeniable bank records, credit card numbers, and receipts bearing his corporate signature.

"Embezzlement of corporate funds combined with moral turpitude clause violations," the attorney continued smoothly. "The board has voted unanimously. Your employment is terminated with immediate cause. Your stock options are forfeited, your executive pension is voided, and a formal referral has been sent to the Dallas District Attorney’s office for financial fraud."

Grant stared around the table, looking for a single ally. There were none. The empire he had built on ambition, deceit, and riding the coattails of the Vance family had evaporated in less than twelve hours.
