Chapter 3 - The Collapse Begins

Morning broke over Dallas with blinding, merciless sunshine, contrasting sharply with the cold dread settling over the Whitmore household.

Grant woke up wrapped in luxury, the storm having passed, leaving behind clear blue skies. Vanessa was still fast asleep beside him in their king-sized bed, snoring softly. Smiling to himself, feeling like a king who had successfully cast off an old, burdensome crown, Grant sauntered down the stairs in his silk bathrobe, anticipating a quiet morning espresso before heading to the office to officially announce his separation from Claire.

He poured his coffee, pulled out his platinum business credit card to check online balances, and tapped his banking app.

Grant frowned. He tapped another account—a personal savings reserve.

Error: Access Denied. Asset Freeze Enforced by Order of Superior Court.

"What the hell is this?" Grant muttered aloud, swiping frantically across his screen.

He dialed his personal banker directly. After three rings, a strained, tense voice answered. "Mr. Whitmore. I’m glad you called. We received emergency legal filings early this morning. All revolving credit lines, personal investment portfolios, and liquid accounts tied to your social security number have been placed under an administrative hold pending a forensic asset audit."

"An audit?!" Grant barked, his voice rising in panic. "On whose authority? I am an executive vice president at Apex Logistics! This is a mistake!"

"It’s not a mistake, Mr.iquely enough," the banker replied coldly. "The directive originated from Vance Holdings legal division. Furthermore, your corporate expense cards have been deactivated."

Before Grant could process the words, his cell phone rang again. It was Apex Logistics’ chief executive officer, a man named Henderson, whom Grant usually played golf with on weekends.

"Grant," Henderson said without any greeting. "Get down to the corporate headquarters immediately. The board has called an emergency session. Your employment status, stock options, and executive authorities are under immediate review following a disclosure of gross corporate misconduct and asset misappropriation."

The phone clicked dead in his ear.

Grant stood in the sunlit kitchen, his coffee cup slipping from his hand and shattering against the tile floor. The house suddenly felt vast, echoing, and entirely hollow.
