Chapter 2 - The Ambush at the FirmBy 8:00 AM the following morning, the atmosphere inside the top-floor executive suite of Vance & Associates was suffocatingly tense. Panorama windows looked out over the skyline, but the view was ignored by the four people sitting on the leather couches.

My father, Richard, sat with his arms crossed, exuding the unearned confidence of a man who believed he had successfully manipulated his way to the top. My mother, Eleanor, clutched her designer handbag, while Natalie continuously adjusted her diamond bracelet, already glancing at her phone as if calculating how to spend her upcoming fortune. Clara sat quietly in the corner, clutching my hand under the table, her face still pale but her posture straighter than it had been the night before.

Arthur Vance, a gray-haired veteran attorney with thirty years of legal battles under his belt, entered the room carrying a thick stack of folders. He did not smile. He didn't offer coffee or pleasantries. He simply sat down at the head of the conference table and laid out the paperwork.

"We are here to finalize the legal restructuring of Vanguard Cybersecurity and the associated real estate assets," Arthur announced calmly.

"Finally," Natalie scoffed, leaning forward. "Let's get this over with. Andrew, sign the power of attorney so Dad and I can start managing the corporate assets properly. You've been overworked, and clearly, your domestic life is a distraction."

"Of course," my father added smoothly, sliding a pen across the table toward me. "It's for the good of the family legacy, Andrew. A real man knows when to delegate to his blood."

I picked up the pen, spun it between my fingers, and looked directly at my father. "You're absolutely right, Dad. It is about family legacy. But before I sign anything, Arthur has a few routine verification disclosures to read into the record."

Arthur pulled a tablet from his briefcase and tapped the screen. A loud speaker in the center of the table activated.

“Tomorrow, once Andrew signs the power of attorney, we get rid of her and the kid. This house belongs to our family.”

Natalie’s voice rang through the room with crystal clarity. Eleanor froze, her hand halting mid-air as she reached for her water glass.

“Your brother is too emotional. We’ll tell him Clara left on her own.”

“Once the shares are transferred, it won’t matter what he believes. By the time he figures it out, he won’t control the company anymore.”

The silence that followed the recording was absolute. The color drained from my father’s face, leaving him looking sickly and aged in a matter of seconds. Natalie snapped her head toward me, her eyes wide with sudden panic.

"What... what is this cheap trick?!" Richard demanded, slamming his fist on the mahogany table. "You recorded us in your own house?! That's illegal!"

"Actually, Mr. Vance, under state real estate law, the property in question is registered solely under Clara's name," Arthur replied coldly. "Furthermore, continuous audio and visual surveillance notices are prominently displayed on all entry points of the residence. The footage, including the clear evidence of physical assault against Mrs. Clara and the discovery of concealed controlled substances in the laundry storage facility, is entirely admissible in a court of law."

"Assault?!" Eleanor gasped, her voice shrill. "She tripped! She's clumsy!"

"We have forensic photo evidence of the wrist contusions, along with finger-mark patterns matching Natalie's exact hand dimensions," Arthur countered without missing a beat.

I stood up, resting my palms on the table, leaning over toward my father. "You thought you were walking in here to take my life’s work. But the document on this table isn't a power of attorney transfer to you. It’s a formal corporate freeze and an asset seizure warrant."
