Chapter 6 - A Seat at the TableThree months after the trial ended, on a crisp autumn evening, the sun was setting over the ocean, casting a warm golden glow across our new home.

The smell of freshly baked bread, roasted vegetables, and garlic herb chicken drifted from the open kitchen. The dining table—a large, custom-made oak table built for warmth and togetherness—was beautifully set with vibrant flowers, handmade stoneware, and glowing candles.
Matthew came running through the hallway, wearing a bright blue soccer jersey, kicking his new ball ahead of him. "Daddy! Look! I scored two goals at practice today!"
I caught him in my arms, swinging him around as he burst into giggles. "Two goals?! You're an absolute legend, buddy! Go wash your hands, dinner is almost ready."
"Okay!" he shouted, dashing off toward the bathroom with pure, unburdened childhood joy.
I walked into the kitchen and found Clara standing near the window, holding our newborn baby girl, Lily, who had been born healthy and strong two weeks prior. Clara looked radiant. The pale, terrified woman who had backed away into the dark kitchen months ago was gone, replaced by a confident, glowing mother who knew she was cherished beyond measure.
I wrapped my arms around her waist from behind, resting my chin gently on her shoulder as we both looked down at our sleeping daughter.
"What are you thinking about?" I asked softly, kissing her cheek.
Clara turned her head, smiling deeply as she looked around our home—at the bright, open space, at our son running back into the room, and at the feast laid out on the table.
"I was just thinking about how far we've come," Clara whispered, her voice full of emotion. "There was a time when I truly believed I was trapped in the dark forever. I thought no one was coming to save us."
I took her free hand, lacing my fingers through hers, feeling the warmth of her skin. "You saved yourself too, Clara. You fought for Matthew every single day. You were strong when they tried to break you. I just made sure the world saw the truth."
We walked together to the dining room. I pulled out the head chair for Clara, settling her comfortably with Lily in her arms, before sitting beside her with Matthew at my right.
There were no whispers of cruelty here. No stolen rights, no hidden motives, and no fear.

I raised my glass, looking across the table at the people who meant everything to me. "To our family," I said softly. "To love, truth, and always having a seat at the table."
Clara smiled, her eyes shining with absolute peace. "To our family."
