Chapter 3 - Shadows and RetributionAcross the city, in a high-end penthouse overlooking Central Park, Odalys Crane was pouring herself a glass of champagne. She had left St. Jude Memorial Hospital right after the doctors rushed in, confident that Dr. Alistair would handle the messy fallout while she collected her reward.

Her phone chimed against the marble island. Expecting a celebratory text from Silas, she picked it up.
Instead, the screen flashed red. Every banking app she opened displayed a stark, glaring message: Account Frozen. She tapped her digital wallet, her stock portfolios, her offshore accounts—all locked. Zero balance.
Panic flared in her chest. She threw open her designer handbag to grab her car keys and flee, but as she unzipped the side pocket, a cold piece of metal pressed gently against the back of her neck.
"Don't move, Miss Crane," a flat, mechanical voice whispered.
Odalys froze, her breath catching in her throat. She slowly turned her head, her eyes widening in sheer terror as she found herself staring down the barrel of a suppressed pistol held by a woman dressed entirely in matte black. Two more operatives stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking as though they had materialized out of thin air.
"Who—who are you?" Odalys whimpered, dropping her champagne glass. It shattered, the golden liquid pooling across the hardwood like spilled blood. "What do you want? I have money! I can give you—"
"You have nothing," the female operative interrupted coldly. "Marcus Osei sends his regards."
Before Odalys could scream, a heavy canvas hood was thrown over her head, plunging her into sudden, suffocating darkness. Strong hands grabbed her arms, hoisting her off her feet as she was carried out of her own penthouse without a single neighbor hearing a sound.
Meanwhile, back at the hospital, the sterile atmosphere of my private suite had transformed. The federal investigators and tactical guards had secured the entire floor. Dr. Alistair sat handcuffed in the corner, weeping quietly as federal agents cataloged his bank records and medical licensing violations.
Nurse Priya stood beside my bed, gently adjusting my IV drip with a look of awe she couldn't completely hide.
"You... you never mentioned your family was so powerful, Ms. Osei," Priya whispered, glancing nervously at the two armed guards standing outside my door.
I managed a weak, tired smile, resting a hand gently over my swollen belly. My daughter was still kicking, safe and warm despite the terror of the afternoon. "I didn't know, Priya. My father always told me to live an honest life, to work hard and earn everything on my own merit. I never knew what he was protecting me from."
The heavy oak door swung open, and my father walked in.
The moment I saw him—the man who had changed diapers, taught me how to ride a bike, and fixed my old sedan in our dusty driveway—now carrying the silent, terrifying aura of a global syndicate boss, my eyes welled with fresh tears.
Marcus rushed to the bedside, dropping to his knees and gently taking my hand in his calloused palms. The iron in his eyes melted away, leaving only the profound, broken love of a father who had nearly lost his world.
"Elena," he choked out, pressing my knuckles to his lips. "My sweet girl. I'm so sorry. I should have pulled you out of this man's orbit the day you met him."
May you like
"You're here now, Dad," I whispered, leaning forward to bury my face in his shoulder. "That's all that matters."
"And they will pay," Marcus murmured, his voice hardening once more into steel. "Every single person who laid a hand on you, or threatened my granddaughter... they will face a reckoning they can never escape."
