Chapter 2 - The Audit of Blood

The subterranean level of the mansion was not designed for guests. Beneath the Italian marble floors and the expansive wine cellars lay a reinforced concrete bunker—a relic of the family's violent rise through the European syndicates. It was soundproofed, climate-controlled, and entirely detached from the outside world.
Ricardo was dragged down the concrete stairs by two enforcers, his expensive Italian leather shoes scraping against the steps. His hands were bound behind his back with industrial zip ties, and the bespoke suit was now stained with dust and sweat.
"You can't do this!" Ricardo screamed, his voice echoing off the damp walls. "I'm your blood! I'm a partner in this enterprise! Mother will—"
"Mother is currently experiencing the reality of absolute isolation," Alejandro said smoothly as he walked down the stairs behind them, carrying a thick leather-bound ledger. He didn't look like a brother anymore; he looked like an executioner performing a routine audit.
They shoved Ricardo into a steel chair bolted directly into the floor. A single overhead halogen lamp cast a harsh, unforgiving light down on him.
Alejandro pulled up a matching metal chair, sat down backward, resting his forearms on the backrest, and opened the ledger. The pages were filled with corporate structures, shell companies in the Caymans, offshore accounts in Zurich, and fraudulent property transfers.
"Let's review the portfolio, little brother," Alejandro said, flipping a page. "You thought you were clever. You hired corporate lawyers who specialized in grey-area asset stripping. You thought because I was overseas fighting a proxy war for the syndicate council, I wouldn't notice the liquidity drain."
"It was just business!" Ricardo spat out, blood trickling from a split lip where he had hit the hearth. "You were gone! Everyone thought you were going to die in Marseilles! Someone had to consolidate power before the Commission stepped in and seized everything!"
Clack.
Alejandro slammed the ledger shut. The sound was like a gunshot in the confined space.
"You didn't do it to protect the family, Ricardo. You did it because you've spent your entire life living in my shadow, wearing my hand-me-down suits, drinking my whiskey, and resenting the fact that no matter how hard you tried, you were always the prince consort while I was the king."
Alejandro leaned forward, his eyes boring into Ricardo's soul. "And worse... you took your frustration out on a woman who had nothing to do with our war. You and Mother thought because she was gentle, because she refused to play the mafia game, she was an easy target."
"She wouldn't sign the transfer papers!" Ricardo yelled, panic finally breaking through his arrogant facade. "She fought us! She said you would kill us both the second you found out! We had to... we had to convince her!"
"Convince her with bruises?" Alejandro’s voice dropped to a terrifying whisper. "With fingerprints around her ribs? With scars on her back?"
Before Ricardo could formulate a lie, Alejandro stood up and motioned to the shadows. Steping out from the darkness was Marcus, the head of Alejandro’s personal security detail—a man whose face was a patchwork of old knife scars and cold efficiency. Marcus placed a heavy steel briefcase on the metal table between them and popped the latches.
Inside weren't guns or knives. They were financial keys, hardware tokens, and biometric override devices.
"Here is how this is going to work," Alejandro said, walking slowly around Ricardo’s chair. "Every single asset, every shell company, every piece of real estate, and every offshore account you and Mother stole will be transferred back into Elena’s name before sunrise. Not mine. Hers."
"And if I refuse?" Ricardo muttered defiantly, though his lower lip was trembling.
"Then Marcus will take a pair of surgical pliers and begin removing your fingers one by one, starting with the ones you used to forge my signature," Alejandro replied casually, as if discussing the weather. "And when you run out of fingers, we'll move on to your teeth. By tomorrow afternoon, you won't even be able to speak your own name, let alone enjoy a glass of Macallan."
Ricardo looked at Marcus, then back at Alejandro’s dead, unblinking eyes. He knew his brother. He knew that the man standing before him had burned down rival compounds without blinking an eye.

"The... the hardware keys are in my private safe upstairs," Ricardo whispered, his defiance completely shattered. "The master codes are in my head."
"Good," Alejandro said, nodding to Marcus. "Go get the keys. And bring me a laptop. We have a lot of paperwork to undo."
