Chapter 3 - The Queen’s Sanctuary

While the digital undoing of the theft echoed through keystrokes in the basement, upstairs in the master bedroom, Elena sat propped up against a mountain of goose-down pillows. The heavy silk curtains were drawn, blocking out the moonlight, but a single bedside lamp cast a warm, golden glow across the room.
The door opened softly. Alejandro stepped inside, having changed out of his travel-worn clothes into a simple black cashmere sweater. The cold, ruthless mafia king who had terrorized a grown man in the basement vanished the moment he crossed the threshold, replaced by a man carrying a porcelain bowl of warm water, clean linen cloths, and a jar of imported soothing ointment.
Elena flinched slightly as he approached the bed, her hands instinctively retreating into the sleeves of her oversized sweater.
"It's just me," Alejandro said softly, his voice losing every harsh edge, turning into a gentle murmur meant only for her. He sat gently on the edge of the mattress, careful not to crowd her space.
"Did... did they hurt you?" she whispered, her eyes searching his face for any sign of injury or anger directed at her. "Your mother... Ricardo... they have men everywhere, Alejandro. You shouldn't have come back alone."
Alejandro set the bowl down on the nightstand. He carefully, tenderly reached out, taking the hem of her oversized sweater between his fingers.
"May I?" he asked, his eyes asking for permission before any movement was made.
Elena hesitated, a tear slipping down her pale cheek, before she slowly nodded.
With agonizing care, Alejandro lifted the sweater, folding it away to reveal the dark, ugly purple fingerprints marring her ribs and the pale, jagged lines crossing her back where old wounds had scarred over. The sight made his jaw tighten so hard muscles flickered in his cheeks, but he forced his hands to remain steady.
He dipped a clean cloth into the warm water, waded it out, and began to clean her skin with a tenderness that defied his terrifying reputation.
"They told me you were dead," Elena whispered, her voice breaking. "For three months, during the height of the Mediterranean blockade, your mother intercepted your communications. She showed me forged casualty reports. She said your body was at the bottom of the sea. And then... when I was broken and alone, they brought out the papers. They said if I signed away our companies, they would let me keep this house, let me live in peace. But every time I resisted, your mother... she watched while Ricardo taught me what happens to people who disobey the family."
Alejandro paused, pressing a gentle, lingering kiss onto her shoulder, right beside a fading bruise.
"They lied to you," he murmured against her skin. "And they are paying for every single second of pain they caused you. Right now, downstairs, Ricardo is signing over every cent they stole back into your exclusive control. Mother is on her way to an isolated estate where she will never see the sun rise over the city again."
Elena looked down at him, her wide, expressive eyes filled with disbelief. "You... you stripped them of everything?"
"They stole from my wife," Alejandro said, looking up into her eyes with fierce, unwavering devotion. "They thought my empire belonged to them. They forgot that I built this empire from the dirt, stone by stone, and that the only reason I ever fought to conquer three countries was so I could lay them at your feet. Without you, it's all just ash and blood."

He began to apply the soothing ointment to her bruises, his large, calloused hands moving with the practiced gentleness of a man handling fragile glass.
"You don't ever have to be afraid again, Elena," he whispered, framing her face in his hands. "The war is over. And our house belongs to us."
