Chapter 5 - Ashes and Empires

The northern highlands were quiet, wrapped in a blanket of thick, grey mist that rolled off the jagged mountain peaks. Doña Victoria sat by the frosted window of the stone cottage, staring out at the desolate landscape. There were no diamonds on her fingers now; they had been stripped away and returned to the family vault. There was no silk, no velvet, no champagne. Only the howling wind and the distant sound of pine trees bending under the weight of the storm.

A black SUV drove up the gravel path, stopped for a moment, and then turned around, descending back down the mountain, leaving her entirely alone. She was queen of nothing now—a ghost haunting a mausoleum of her own making.

Back at the mansion, the evening sun cast a warm, golden glow across the manicured lawns and the expansive terrace. The air smelled of blooming jasmine and wet earth after a passing spring shower.

Alejandro stood on the terrace, leaning against the stone balustrade, holding a glass of aged whiskey. Footsteps approached softly from behind, and a familiar warmth wrapped around his waist as Elena slid her arms around him, resting her head gently against his back.

He turned in her embrace, his strong arms closing around her, pulling her flush against his chest as if he never intended to let her go again.

"The accounts are secure," Alejandro murmured into her hair, breathing in the scent of her shampoo. "The properties are transferred. Ricardo is airborne over the Atlantic, and Mother is settled in the highlands. No one will ever touch you again."

Elena looked up at him, her bright eyes shining with a quiet, hard-won peace. The shadows of the past weeks had vanished, replaced by the unshakeable strength of a love that had been tested by fire and betrayal, and emerged unbreakable.

"You didn't have to burn it all down to save me," she whispered softly with a faint smile.

Alejandro shook his head, pressing a tender kiss to her forehead. "I told you the moment I saw what they did... they didn't just rob my wife. They declared war on the wrong king."

He pulled her closer, watching the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in deep shades of gold, amber, and violet. The empire was theirs—not just built on blood and power, but forged in the fire of absolute devotion. And tonight, for the first time in six long months, the king and his queen were finally home.
