Chapter 2 - THE STERILE WHITE ROOM AND THE IRONCLAD WILLThe sterile smell of antiseptic and the rhythmic beep-beep-beep of a high-end fetal monitor were the first things I registered when I woke up.

I was in the VIP maternity and trauma suite of the Naval Medical Center in San Diego—a facility entirely off-limits to civilian jurisdiction, protected by twenty-four-hour armed sentries and clearance protocols that required presidential authorization to bypass.

"Her vitals are stabilizing," a soft, clinical voice murmured nearby.

I turned my head slowly on the crisp white pillow. Standing beside my bed was Dr. Rachel Chen, one of the top perinatologists in the country, accompanied by my father.

Admiral Hector Sterling looked smaller than his four stars suggested, yet infinitely more dangerous. His silver hair was cropped military-short, his tailored civilian blazer draped over a chair, and his deeply lined face etched with a terrifying blend of relief and murderous fury. When he saw my eyes open, he stepped forward, gently taking my hand in his calloused palm.

"Gen," he whispered, his voice cracking slightly before hardening back into steel. "You’re safe. The baby’s heart rate is strong. The toxicity from the sedative Julian slipped into your prenatal vitamins has been flushed out of your system. You and your son are going to be fine."

"My son?" I asked, my voice a dry rasp.

"He's being monitored in the adjacent NICU suite just as a precaution," Dr. Chen reassured me with a warm smile. "You went into early labor from the trauma and chemical shock, Gen, but we managed to arrest contractions using a localized magnesium drip. You're holding steady at thirty-four weeks. A few more days of rest, and your little boy will be ready to meet the world safely."

Anger surged through my veins, hot and sharp. I tried to sit up, but my father gently pressed me back down against the mattress.

"Where is he?" I asked, every syllable laced with ice.

"Julian is currently sitting in a holding cell three levels down," my father said, a thin, humorless smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Along with his precious mistress, Victoria. The Department of Justice, the SEC, and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service are all currently reviewing the digital portfolio Marcus Vale delivered to my office this morning."

"Marcus?"

"Your husband’s chief financial officer has been moonlighting as my confidential informant for three years," my father explained calmly. "Ever since Julian started creeping around corporate shell companies to siphon your mother’s trust assets. Marcus brought me the ledger three hours before you pressed your watch button."

I let out a slow, steady breath, feeling the heavy burden of the last ten years lift from my shoulders. Julian had spent a decade believing he was the mastermind of our marriage—that he had charmed a naive girl from an ordinary background and used her quiet investments to fund Vance Global Technologies. He had no idea that every patent, every venture capital round, and every government defense contract his company secured had only been approved because Admiral Hector Sterling’s secure encryption keys were wired directly into the background checks.

"He thinks he can talk his way out of this," I murmured, staring up at the white ceiling tiles. "He always thinks he's the smartest man in the room."

"Let him talk," my father replied, his eyes gleaming with cold anticipation. "Because by the time my legal team finishes shredding his corporate charters, Julian Vance won't just be broke. He’ll be wearing an orange jumpsuit in a federal supermax facility for the rest of his natural life."
