Chapter 4 - THE FALL OF VANCE GLOBALThe corporate dismantling of Vance Global Technologies was surgical, absolute, and televised globally on every major financial network.

Within forty-eight hours of Julian’s arrest, federal marshals stormed the glass-and-steel headquarters of Vance Global in Manhattan. Employees were escorted out of the building with their personal belongings in cardboard boxes as government auditors seized the executive servers, froze all corporate accounts, and hauled away filing cabinets full of incriminating evidence.

The board of directors held an emergency virtual meeting at dawn on Thursday.

I sat in my private suite at the naval hospital, nursing a cup of warm chamomile tea, while Dr. Chen helped me monitor my laptop screen. On the display, twelve pale, panic-stricken executives stared out from their respective webcams, looking as though they had just witnessed a nuclear strike.

"Mrs. Vance—or, rather, Ms. Sterling," the interim board chairman stammered, nervously adjusting his silk tie. "We have reviewed the emergency restructuring documentation filed by Vance & Sterling Legal. The majority voting shares... they are entirely held by your family trust."

"They are," I replied, my voice calm, clear, and projected effortlessly across the conference call. "And as of 8:00 AM Eastern Standard Time, the board of directors of Vance Global Technologies is formally dissolved."

"Dissolved?!" several executives shouted simultaneously.

"You can't do that!" another protested. "The company is valued at over two billion dollars! We have international supply chains, defense contracts pending—!"

"You had defense contracts," I corrected, leaning slightly toward the camera. "Which have already been transferred to Sterling Defense Dynamics by order of the Department of Defense, due to fraudulent corporate leadership and systemic security breaches."

The virtual room fell into a stunned, horrified silence.

"As for the remaining assets," I continued smoothly, "they are being liquidated to pay back every single investor, vendor, and employee Julian and his management team defrauded over the last five years. Any executive who participated in or covered up the financial concealment will be turned over to federal prosecutors by noon."

I closed the laptop lid with a soft, definitive click, cutting off the chorus of desperate, panicked pleas echoing from the speakers.

Outside my hospital window, the sun was beginning to set over the Pacific, casting a brilliant, warm amber glow across the horizon. The storm had passed. The wreckage had been cleared. And for the first time in ten years, I was completely, beautifully free of the shadows that had tried to consume me.
