Chapter 3 - THE INTERROGATION OF A DESPERATE MANThree days later, in the secure federal holding facility beneath the naval base, the lighting was a harsh, flickering fluorescent gray.

Julian Vance sat at the center of a stainless-steel interrogation table. The brilliant, charismatic tech CEO who commanded boardrooms across Manhattan was entirely gone. His custom designer suit was wrinkled and stained with salt water, his hair uncombed, and the dark circles under his eyes spoke of three sleepless nights spent screaming at empty concrete walls.
The heavy steel door swung open with a loud clank.
I walked into the room, wearing a tailored navy blazer and maternity slacks, walking with the slow, deliberate grace of a woman who held absolute power. Behind me walked Marcus Vale, carrying a thick leather briefcase, followed by two armed military police officers who stood guard by the door.
Julian’s head snapped up. When he saw me—alive, healthy, and walking under my own power—his jaw dropped open in absolute, stunned disbelief.
"Gen...?" he choked out, standing up so fast his metal chair screeched against the concrete floor. He took two steps forward before the MPs crossed their batons, blocking his path. "Gen, thank God! You're alive! They told me—the guards wouldn't tell me anything! Victoria, she—she went crazy, she forced me into this, she threatened to ruin the company if I didn't—"
"Save it, Julian," I said, my voice cutting through the damp air like a razor blade. I pulled out a chair opposite him and sat down smoothly, resting my hands on the table.
Julian stopped dead. He stared at me—really stared at me—for the first time in our ten-year marriage. He looked at the quiet authority in my posture, the expensive fabric of my clothes, and the cold, unblinking glare in my eyes.
"Who... who are you?" he whispered, a tremor of genuine fear finally cracking his voice. "The police—they called you Commander Sterling when they processed my paperwork. They said your father is... an Admiral."
"My father is Admiral Hector Sterling," I said evenly. "The man whose military logistics command has cleared every single government contract Vance Global Technologies has ever bid on. The man who personally signed off on the seed capital that saved your failing startup in your first year out of business."
Julian stumbled backward, his knees hitting his chair. He collapsed onto the seat, his face turning an unhealthy, mottled shade of pale. "That... that was an anonymous angel investor. A private trust..."
"My trust," I corrected quietly. "My mother’s family foundation. We wanted to see if you had the character to build a company honestly, or if you were just another opportunist looking for a stepping stone."
"Gen, please," Julian begged, his voice breaking into a pathetic whine as he leaned over the table, clasping his hands together in a desperate gesture of supplication. "We have a child coming! We built a life together! You love me—you know you love me! We can drop these charges, we can leave the country, we can—"
Marcus Vale stepped forward, snapping open his briefcase and dropping a thick stack of forensic financial audits onto the table right in front of Julian’s trembling hands.
"There will be no leaving the country, Mr. Vance," Marcus said, his voice cold and professional. "Our forensic audit has uncovered systematic wire fraud, international tax evasion across three offshore havens in the Caymans, and deliberate embezzlement of minor-ward trust funds totaling forty-eight million dollars."
Julian frantically flipped open the folder, his eyes darting across columns of numbers, wire transfer receipts bearing his digital signature, and text transcripts between him and Victoria Hayes detailing their plot to institutionalize me under the pretense of postpartum psychosis.
"These... these are forged," Julian stammered, shaking his head frantically. "Victoria must have—she had access to my private terminal—"
"Victoria signed a full confession two hours ago," I interrupted softly. "In exchange for a federal plea deal, she gave us your encrypted master drives, your personal offshore account passwords, and the audio files of you planning my termination at the Cabo resort."
Julian’s breath hitched. He stared down at the documents, the full, crushing weight of his absolute, unsparing destruction finally crashing over him. Every lie he had told, every person he had used, every vicious calculation he had made to secure his social standing had all been meticulously documented, verified, and sealed by the most powerful legal apparatus in the United States government.
"You... you set me up," Julian whispered, a dark, bitter hatred flashing across his eyes as he looked up at me. "You watched me build everything, and all this time, you were just waiting to tear it down."
May you like
"You built nothing, Julian," I said, standing up slowly from the table, looking down at my legally ruined husband with complete and total indifference. "You merely rented space in my world. And now, eviction day has arrived."
I turned on my heel, walking toward the heavy steel door without looking back once, leaving him alone in the gray light with the ashes of his empire.
